WARRIOR VOLLEYBALL
Waves wipe out Warriors in 5 games
The defending champions keep Hawaii out of its system
MALIBU, Calif. » At this point, a split would be very good.
If No. 6 Hawaii is to even its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation series with top-ranked Pepperdine today (5 p.m. Hawaii time) the Warriors will need to answer a couple of questions.
Can they stop the taller Waves when it counts and can they find a middle attack? Hawaii could do neither last night at Firestone Fieldhouse, falling to the defending national champs 30-24, 27-30, 24-30, 30-19, 15-8.
The Warriors had three hitters with double-figure kills, led by Jose Delgado's 18, but it was not enough to hold off the Waves after 2 hours and 7 minutes.
John Parfitt had a match-high 21 kills to lead No. 1 Pepperdine to its 18th consecutive home victory, a streak which began after a loss to Hawaii in 2004. The Waves improved their home record against the Warriors to 17-5.
Hawaii is now 0-2 in five-game matches this year. The Warriors (4-4, 2-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) will try to salvage their trip against the Waves (7-1, 7-1).
"It was an up-and-down match and, at the end, we were more crummy than they were," Hawaii coach Mike Wilton said. "In Games 2 and 3, were in system and we weren't the other three.
"Sure, they're beatable, but we weren't able to do it."
Hawaii appeared to take control in Game 3, taking a commanding lead at 29-22. But Pepperdine began to gain momentum when holding off four game points behind Tanner Sutherland's serve to close to 29-26.
Warriors senior Delgado finally ended the threat with a kill but the tide had turned. Pepperdine broke away from a 3-3 tie in Game 4 to jump out to a 17-10 lead.
Hawaii was never able to close the gap in never figuring out Pepperdine's diverse attack. The Waves used kills by Tom Hulse, John Parfitt, Paul Carroll and Andy Hein en route to a 27-17 margin
An ace by Warrior reserve Jake Schkud brought Hawaii to 29-19 but Schkud's service error ended Game 4, a portend of what would happen the next 15 minutes.
It was 3-3 and then it was over as the Waves went on a 5-0 run to take control of Game 5. Three UH hitting errors combined with three kills by Parfitt put Pepperdine up 8-3.
At 10-5, a 4-0 serving run by Hein sealed the win for the Waves. The Warriors held off one match point, on a kill by Matt Carere, only to have Sutherland put down his ninth kill to end it.
Sutherland had just one error in 13 swings, hitting .615. Carroll finished with 15 kills and Hein 11 kills and eight blocks for Pepperdine.
Hawaii outblocked the Waves 12.5-12 with Dio Dante in on seven. The Warriors also got 17 kills from Carere and 13 from Lauri Hakala.
"Both teams missed a lot of serves," Wilton said, noting that his team had 26 service errors to Pepperdine's 25. But they served tougher than we did.
"I think our guys had the right mental set but then we got into a shell. We started serving too easy and they upped theirs."
