Romantic autographs
Romance novelist Jayne Ann Krentz will sign her new romantic thriller, "All Night Long" (Putman, 2006), at 2 p.m. Sunday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Ala Moana Center.
Krentz is the author of "Falling Awake," "Truth or Dare" and "Smoke in Mirrors."
She has published 41 best-sellers in a row, with "All Night Long" debuting at No. 6 on the New York Times list when it was released in January.
She also writes futuristic romance under the name Jayne Castle and historical romance under the name Amanda Quick.
Pageant extension
The deadline to enter the Miss Hawaii Teen USA pageant has been extended to Sunday. Anyone interested should attend a meeting from 1 to 2:30 p.m. that day at 2Couture, 1128 Nuuanu Ave., Suite 204.
The pageant, March 12 at the Sheraton Waikiki, is open to single, unmarried girls who will be age 15 to 18 no later than July 1. Applicants must provide proof of Hawaii residency.
The pageant consists of interviews, gown and swimsuit competitions. Call 538-6690.
Tailgate for a cause
Volunteers from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hawaii will collect "HI-5" cans and bottles from tailgaters at Aloha Stadium during the Pro Bowl Sunday. They'll claim the 5-cent deposit per container to support club projects helping local kids.
Tailgaters in the two main parking lots will be given two plastic bags, one for glass, the other for aluminum and plastic. Filled bags can be left behind your car for pickup. Fans are asked not to mix trash with the cans and bottles.
Scholarly talk
Charu Gupta, a Rama Watamull Distinguished Indian Visiting Scholar at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, will speak about "Women and Hindu Fundamentalism in India" at 3 p.m. Sunday at Revolution Books.
Gupta, a feminist historian at the University of Delhi, has authored several books and articles on gender, sexuality, fundamentalism and nationalism.
Sunday's free talk, followed by an informal discussion, will cover issues such as the rise of religious fundamentalism -- whether Christian, Muslim or Hindu -- and its effect on women.

Bands take on the persona of Bob Marley
From legends such as Gregory Issacs, to new dancehall artists Morgan Heritage, a mix of reggae stars and newcomers will perform on the second annual Bob Marley Hawaii tour, put on by promoters Three Sexy Guys. More than 25 bands -- including returnees Ooklah the Moc -- will perform three or more songs by the reggae icon in their own styles.
Previously held at the Aloha Tower Marketplace, the tour moves to the Hawaiian Adventures Water Park to make room for more fans, and four stages. More than 6,000 attended the 2005 show.

Hana Hou
Traditional Hawaiian music group Na Papalapalai is the upcoming headliner for the Hana Hou Music Series. The trio will likely play favorites off their albums "Makani 'Olu'olu" and "Ke 'Ala Beauty."
Na Palapalai, a past winner of several Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, has earned accolades for "Best Group of the Year" and "Hawaiian Album of the Year" in 1995, and five more awards in 1993 including "Hawaiian Album of the Year," "Album of the Year" and "Group of the Year."

Michael Staats
There's room for more than one comedian in town at a time.
While he's quick to point that he is not one of the "and friends" at Paul Ogata's show at the Blaisdell, Michael "Mr. Diamondhead" Staats will be entertaining audiences this month with his special blend of "performing/singing/sightgagging/insulting/and ad-libbing."
Staats will appear this weekend at Sharkey's Comedy Club in Panama Hattie's in Aiea (located next door to the Dixie Grill).

Sunset on the Beach
This weekend's Sunset on the Beach movie screening will include a tribute to the Pro Bowl, taking place at the Aloha Stadium Sunday.
The featured films will be decidedly non-football in nature, however.
Saturday, see the short film "Polynesian Power" and "Batman Begins"; on Sunday, "Spanglish" screens.
As always, there will be entertainment before each movie begins, as well as food from Waikiki restaurants.

Ogata...and friends
Instead of you and your sweetie hiding away for a little alone time this Valentine's Day, how about spending some quality time with comedian Paul Ogata and his fellow comedians?
Winner of the TakeOut Comedy competition, Ogata made his first appearance on national TV in 2004 on "The Late Late Show." He also starred in "Amazing Asian," a comedy which made its way into the Hawaii International Film Festival.
Ogata takes the stage at the Laugh Factory at Neal Blaisdell Center. Other February dates for the Laugh Factory include Andy Bumatai at 7:30 p.m. Saturday ($30).

The Wyland way: Ocean artist Wyland hosts a weekend's worth of activities beginning Friday with a painting demonstration and auction, 6 to 10 p.m. at Wyland Galleries in Waikiki (next to Planet Hollywood). The art and action move to the North Shore for the opening of Wyland Galleries in a new location in the North Shore Marketplace. Celebrations will run from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu
San Francisco group Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu, noted pioneers of "hula mua," traditional hula set to non-Hawaiian music, returns to the isle with some of their most well-received dance pieces of the last two decades.
This is their third trip to Hawaii Theatre, where both traditional and contemporary hula will be performed. Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu is especially noted for their production "The Natives are Restless," which presents perspectives on some of the issues Hawaiians past and present have faced.

'Charlotte's Web'
Paliku Theatre presents the beloved tale of the bittersweet friendship between Charlotte, an elderly spider, and Wilbur, a young pig set for slaughter, in "Charlotte's Web," based upon the Newbery Award-winning children's book.
The cast includes Jessie Mowry as Charlotte; Issac Waters at Wilbur; Debbie Mench as Fern, the young girl; Jonathan Oshiro as Templeton the rat; and Josh Collas as Homer Zuckerman, the farmer.

'Encore!'
Students from the performing arts department at Iolani School present "Encore!"
The bi-annual event is the largest fundraiser for the school's department and includes performances by students in the chorus, orchestra, and stage band, as well as from the dance, drama and lower school music departments.
The performances will be held at various sites throughout the Iolani campus.
Performances start at 11:15 a.m. with a routine from the dance department in the lower gym, followed by entertainment every 15 minutes.
Food from Maui Tacos, Hee Hing Restaurant, 3660 on the Rise and more will be available for purchase with scrip.

'Cats!'
You can never have enough of "Cats!" Army Community Theatre presents their take on Andrew Lloyd Webber's production, Feb. 23 to March 11.
ACT has the honor of being the first community theater in Hawaii to present the musical, which was the longest-running show on Broadway until "The Phantom of the Opera" recently beat its record.

Kamehameha Hoolaulea
Kamehameha School's annual Hoolaulea, in its 76th year, promises to be a day of fun, food, and activities, with all proceeds going toward student enrichment grants.
Avoid the hunt for parking at the school and take advantage of the free shuttles that will run between the school campus and the school's bus terminal and Kapalama and Damien High schools.
A small number of spaces will be set aside for parking on campus.

Heritage festival
The Honolulu Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce and the 54th Cherry Blossom Festival are joining up to present the Heritage Festival at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.
Musical performances, mochi pounding, martial arts and appearances by the reigning Cherry Blossom Festival Queen, Brooke Hasegawa, and her court are included in the day's events. Like the Cherry Blossom Festival, an annual event since 1953, the Heritage Festival is intended to help preserve Japanese traditions and culture.

Listen for the beating of the drums at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii's Heritage Festival later this month. Taiko drums are used in many Japanese festivals, including the 26th annual Pan-Pacific Festival held along Kalakaua Avenue last year.
