COMING UP

New Zealand author comes to UH

Award-winning author Patricia Grace of New Zealand will present her Maori stories Wednesday and Thursday at the University of Hawaii-Manoa.

Grace has written six novels and five short-story collections, beginning in 1975 when she published the first collection of short stories by a Maori woman.

Her 2001 novel, "Dogside Story," won the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize for fiction and her latest, "Tu" (Penguin Books) won the Deutz Medal for Fiction or Poetry at the Montana New Zealand Book Awards last year.

Grace will present a reading at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the UH Art Auditorium and speak on "Indigenizing the Novel in Aotearoa: The Role of Culture and Identity" at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Kuykendall Auditorium. Her appearances, under the UH Distinguished Visiting Scholar Program in the Liberal Arts, are free. Call 956-7619.
