Top-ranked Kamehameha outlasted No. 4 St. Louis 54-49 in an overtime thriller last night in front of a boisterous crowd at Kekuhaupio Gym.
Warrior Rykin Enos led the way with a game-high 16 points, including the crucial layup that sent the game into OT.
With 6 seconds remaining in regulation, Enos penetrated the Crusader defense for the bucket to tie the score at 45.
"Coach (Jesse Nakanishi) just said 'Take it to the hole,' and all my teammates split out, and I just took it down the middle," Enos said. "I've been practicing my shot this week, and the coaches were telling me to shoot with confidence."
In the extra period, Kamehameha (10-0) jumped out to a 49-46 advantage, only to have St. Louis' Jeremiah Masoli drain a 3-pointer to tie the game.
But with 18 seconds to play, Randy Cummings hit a 3-pointer of his own to put the Warriors up 52-49. Masoli, who finished with 13 points, tried to tie the game yet again with a long 3-point attempt, but he could not hit, and Enos sank two free throws to seal the victory for Kamehameha.
"I'm just ecstatic," Nakanishi said. "In November, we set this goal to get first or second (in the ILH) and not have to play in the ILH tournament, and we accomplished that tonight. This is a nice confidence booster to beat a great team like St. Louis."
The Warriors jumped out to an early 13-6 lead, thanks in part to eight straight points from Enos. But St. Louis (6-4) closed the gap to 13-10 at the end of the first quarter when Scott Smith got a quick two points off an in-bound lob pass with 1 second left.
Kamehameha increased its advantage to 17-10 to begin the second period, but the Crusaders pulled to within 19-18. Two free throws by Kamehameha's Andrew Godinet increased the lead to three points, but Saint Louis' Jamison Miller converted a three-point play after being fouled while making a lay-up.
Enos missed a 3-pointer as time ran out, leaving the score at 21-21 at intermission.
St. Louis jumped out to a 33-26 advantage with 4:17 to play in the third quarter. Kamehameha rallied back to within three points, but the Crusaders increased their lead to 42-37 with 2:58 remaining in regulation.
However, St. Louis' inability to hit free throws down the stretch kept the Warriors in the game and allowed Kamehameha to gain enough momentum for the victory.
"It's a critical situation where you gotta knock down free throws in that stretch, and we didn't," Crusader head coach Delbert Tengan said. "It's been our Achilles' heel. We've lost four games, three of them in overtime, and they all came down to a matter of making free throws.
"It comes down to making plays, and they made the plays when they had to and we didn't."
The Warriors are guaranteed a spot in the state tournament with the victory. Kamehameha has two regular-season games remaining against Punahou and Iolani.
"The kids are putting themselves in a position to let things go their way, and they are being rewarded," Nakanishi said. "We're going to go into the locker room and set a new goal. ... I'm sure it will be to win the ILH championship."
