WAHINE BASKETBALL
Wahine get second straight road win
SAN JOSE, Calif. » Behind another double-double by Tanya Smith and a season-high 23 points from Janevia Taylor, Hawaii completed its first perfect WAC women's basketball road trip under coach Jim Bolla with a relatively easy 76-61 victory over San Jose State last night in front of 922 fans at the Event Center.
Taylor, thriving as a two-guard after starting the year at the point, added eight rebounds and five assists with just one turnover. Smith poured in 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double.
The Wahine (13-7, 4-5 Western Athletic Conference) won back-to-back WAC road games for the first time since March 2003.
"I think these last two games we've played more as a team than we had been doing," Bolla said. "We really did a good job of executing, and I'm very happy with the way they're playing right now."
Amy Sanders added 15 points, six assists and five rebounds, and walk-on Amy Kotani had a career-high nine points. Hawaii finished with 21 assists on 25 field goals and outrebounded the Spartans 45-36.
"One of our goals was to keep them off the glass," Bolla said. "Early in the game, they were getting some second chances and our key was to put a body on them, get the rebound, and get the ball down the court."
With the score tied at 14 midway through the first half, a jumper by Sanders ignited a 14-6 Rainbow Wahine run that gave them an eight-point lead. After that, the Spartans (10-8, 5-3) never got closer than five. The Wahine opened the second half with a 9-2 run and were never threatened the rest of the way.
"These were big wins for us, but now we've got to come home and keep it going against a very good Fresno team," Bolla said.
Hawaii takes on the Bulldogs on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
