Big rocks plus gravity equals damage below
When one looks to buy or rent a house, isn't it the buyer's responsibility to look for any hazards such as flood zones and termites? Should the obvious presence of rocky cliffs above the property be ignored?
People, quit trying to blame the state or the landowner on the ridge above for the natural geologic process common to our volcanic islands ("Boulder threatens home," Star-Bulletin, Jan. 28). If you choose to live at the base of a mountain, be prepared for potentially fatal consequences of your decision. Rocks fall into valleys -- it's meant to be!

Case willing to work for everyone's gain
I think it is awesome
that Rep. Ed Case is going to run against Sen. Dan Akaka for the U.S. Senate. While I do not support Case on a number of positions, I feel he is more apt and willing to work for compromise to the benefit of the whole. The current Hawaii delegation to Washington is complacent, out of touch and their votes are so partisan.
Case is being taken to task for going outside the box, outside the good old boy network. To him I wish the best of luck!

We need more patrols along U.S. border
Please lead in asking national authorities to seriously step up action at U.S. borders. With the discovery of a sophisticated drug tunnel between Mexico and the United States, leaders who are outraged about drugs in our state and country cannot view this as "ho hum" news.

Financial consultant sets inspiring example
Congratulations on your story on Naalei Keaunui (
"Financial adviser keeps customers in the money," Jan. 29). Please, we need more of these inspirational stories for our youth. In today's go-go world, too often young people are looking for instant gratification or the quick road to success. Naalei speaks to traditional values and the spirit of hard work to achieve life's goals.
This article was immediately forwarded to my daughter and several friends as an example of how to be successful in life. Naalei did it through commitment, hard work and the sense of values that she received from her mother and her church.
Please have more stories about folks just like Naalei. Our youth need role models that are grounded in faith, cultural values and family.
Thank you and Naalei for making my Sunday a little brighter.

Bush contradicted himself in speech
In his State of the Union address, President Bush said that we need to stop research on science and used human cloning as the reason for it. Then he said research and development is important and that we need to get innovative! This is great, but why is he saying one thing one day and another a few days later? Is he just reading what the speech writer has written for him and not understanding what he is saying?
He also said that the federal deficit will be cut in half by 2009. Where will he be at that time? Doesn't his term end in 2008? He is spending money so freely now, I don't think he is a good person to manage our finances. We don't need a president who speaks with a forked tongue!
