"We saw that game the other night and that gave us a little spook," said Pac-Five coach Randy Oyama. "But when you play good defense and get good pitching, you're going to have a good chance to win."
With ace right-hander Jessica Ghazali setting the pace with an eight-strikeout performance, Pac-Five put forth a flawless defensive effort and took advantage of timely hits to advance to today's semifinals with an 8-2 win over Waipahu at Central Oahu Regional Park.
"Her fastball was very effective," Oyama said. "She did a good job for just about the whole night, except for maybe a hard-hit ball or two. And actually, we were a kind of fortunate too, and we were able to take advantage of some defensive errors and base-running mistakes."
With Waipahu starter Elsa Apo holding the Wolfpack to seven hits, Pac-Five benefited from eight defensive miscues by a young Marauder lineup which featured a freshman and five sophomores.
Pac-Five rallied for four runs in the bottom of the second, thanks largely to four Waipahu errors. Back-to-back infield errors allowed Cara Hasegawa and Ghazali to reach safely and give the Wolfpack a pair of base runners. Leann Lariosa followed with a single through the infield, which was bobbled in center field, allowing Hasegawa's courtesy runner, Tatum Tokuda, to score.
After Apo retired Keline Yoshimura on a chopper back to the pitcher's circle, Brennan Clark rolled a grounder to the left side of the infield. Waipahu shortstop Kari Sakamoto fielded cleanly and quickly threw home to gun down Ghazali's courtesy runner, Chanel Casamina, at the plate. But an RBI single by Chante Tesoro and a two-run infield throwing error on Stacie Sueda's grounder allowed Pac-Five to plate three more runs. All four runs were unearned.
The Wolfpack rallied for three more scores in the third and netted their final run on a towering solo homer by Ghazali.
Waipahu saved its best effort of the night for the fifth inning, when they touched Ghazali for a pair of runs. Apo led off the rally with an infield single and stole second to move into scoring position. Junior catcher Krissaundra Noga followed and smoked a ringing double into the gap in left center to drive in Apo. After Ghazali recorded the first out of the inning by striking out Maile Spencer, Mahea Spencer dropped a single into short center field to score Noga.
But Ghazali rebounded quickly, retiring the next two hitters on a comebacker and another strikeout.
