RAINBOW WAHINE BASKETBALL
Rainbow Wahine tough out rare road win
From staff and wire reports
MOSCOW, Idaho » After suffering through a disappointing 2-5 record in January, Hawaii opened a new month with a gritty come-from-behind Western Athletic Conference women's basketball victory.
With starting forward Brittany Grice limited to just one point in 20 minutes before fouling out, backup Tanya Smith notched her first career double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and had five blocks as the Rainbow Wahine won for just the second time in their last seven games, defeating Idaho 66-60 last night at the Cowan Spectrum.
A crowd of 855 watched as Janevia Taylor played all 40 minutes and had 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals for Hawaii (12-7, 3-5), which outscored Idaho 35-24 in the second half. The Vandals led 36-31 at halftime, and were 7-1 in games they were leading at intermission before last night.
"We've been down before at the half, so it wasn't a big deal to us," Wahine coach Jim Bolla said. "Five of our last six games we've had a chance to win and didn't have the desire to pull it out. We were a bunch of individuals, but tonight we came together and were able to pull out a win."
Idaho's Emily Faurholt, the WAC's leading scorer, was held to 15 points on 6-for-17 shooting, and had nine rebounds. Jessica Summers added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Vandals (7-12, 3-5), who are tied with Hawaii and Nevada for eighth in the conference.
"We didn't want to dig our hole any deeper," Bolla said. "We don't want to be eight or nine and have to play in the play-in game for the tournament. The only way we're going to avoid that is to get some wins."
The Wahine raced out to an early 13-8 lead behind seven early points from Taylor, but the Vandals answered by outscoring Hawaii 22-8 over the next 8 minutes to take a nine-point lead, their biggest of the game. Hawaii eventually cut the lead to five by halftime, but were outrebounded 21-17 before the break by the WAC's worst rebounding team.
"I told them these games are going to come down to heart," Bolla said. "Even though we weren't rebounding, I told the girls we're still in the game and it's going to come down to who wants it more."
The Vandals stretched their lead to 48-40 with 10:42 to go, but Cassidy Chretien scored seven points as part of a 12-1 run that gave Hawaii a 52-49 advantage. Idaho managed to tie the game at 56, but a jumper by Taylor and three quick points by Tanya Smith helped the Wahine pull away for the victory in the school's first trip to Moscow.
Hawaii finished a meager 1-for-7 from the 3-point line, but was 21-for-28 from the free-throw line.
The Vandals were 8-for-11 from the charity stripe and shot 36 percent from the field in their fourth straight loss.
Hawaii finishes its road trip at San Jose State tomorrow at 5 p.m. The Spartans (5-2) rank third in the conference.
