RAINBOW BASEBALL
'Bows win a wild one against Aztecs
It was a wild night. A very wild night.
Twenty runs. Twenty-five hits. Ten errors. Nine wild pitches. And three lead changes, the last a very unlikely one.
Hawaii scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to outlast San Diego State 11-9 at Murakami Stadium last night.
All that was missing was a full moon, according to Rainbows coach Mike Trapasso.
"It was just amazing," Trapasso said after UH defeated the Aztecs for the second straight night in the season-opening series for both teams. "There were two reasons we won the game. No. 1, without question, was character. This team has shown in the fall and the summer with their work ethic. You don't see true character until you encounter adversity."
The Rainbows saw adversity three times in the form of deficits, each time finding a way to rally. The key was offense, Trapasso's second reason for the victory.
Hawaii banged out 12 hits, none more critical than Justin Frash's two-out, bases-clearing single in the bottom of the seventh that pushed the Rainbows to their final lead.
"We do a lot of two-out hitting in practice," said Frash, the junior designated hitter who went 3-for-4 and scored four times. "The pitch (from Brett Douglas) was a curve, down and low, and probably a ball. But I got my bat on it.
"It feels good to be 2-0, but it means nothing. Tomorrow is another game. We're 0-0. We need to come out again and hit the ball."
The teams meet again at 6:35 tonight. The series concludes with a 1 p.m. game tomorrow. Hawaii's starter tonight is expected to be junior Mark Rodrigues. San Diego State coach Tony Gwynn said he hadn't decided who he'd go with.
"Seven errors. Seven errors," was all Gwynn said about the game. "That tells the story, I think. You make seven errors and you can't expect to win."
Rich Olsen picked up the win in relief and Darrell Fisherbaugh earned his second save in as many nights, striking out the side to end the game.
Fisherbaugh had six strikeouts in the final two innings, giving up one hit and walking one. He got out of a bases-loaded situation in the eighth by striking out pinch hitter Joseph Scaperotta on three pitches.
"I didn't expect to pitch again," Fisherbaugh said. "I got a little nervous in the eighth and I knew I had to get it done. Having three base runners on is a bit of a threat.
"I had my slider and my changeup working. It was a pretty fun game."
