Bulldogs keep pace with Menehunes
Kaimuki climbs to a game behind Moanalua with the tiebreaker in hand
Behind the inspired play of Keone Reyes and Beau Albrechtson, No. 10 Kaimuki kept alive its hopes of a first-round bye in the Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball playoffs.
Albrechtson and Reyes combined for 20 fourth-quarter points and finished with 18 and 17 points, respectively, as the Bulldogs defeated host Roosevelt last night 65-55. The win moves Kaimuki to within a game of second-place Moanalua in the OIA East.
"We needed this to stay in the race," Reyes said. "The guard got the ball inside to us and we were just doing our job."
Reyes added eight rebounds for the Bulldogs, who nearly gave the game away down the stretch.
After six straight points by Albrechtson gave the Bulldogs a 59-47 lead with 2:17 left, Kaimuki turned the ball over four times in a 31-second span that resulted in eight Rough Riders points which cut the lead to four.
But Keo Keola missed two free throws for Roosevelt, and Reyes and Albrechtson each made a pair to seal the Bulldogs' win.
"We lost (Jarett Chiu) when he got his eye poked and that really affected us," Bulldogs coach Kelly Grant said. "He sees the floor very well and has better vision so not having him out there hurt. But it's a good testament to our team that we were able to overcome that."
Chiu was able to return to the game for the final minute, during which Kaimuki scored the game's final six points.
"This is a big boost for us," Albrechtson said. "We feel we can take any team and we're going to need this victory to help push us on."
Roosevelt raced out to an early 8-5 lead, but the Bulldogs took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Daniel Colon with 4:10 left. Colon finished with 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
"The funny thing about these guys is that I can yell and scream at these guys all I want, but until I tell them that they're going to run if they don't listen, they respond," Grant said. "Every game is tough down the stretch and we've still got a lot to do to get that bye."
Despite trailing the Menehunes by a game, the Bulldogs own the tiebreaker after beating Moanalua 65-62 last week. The Menehunes still have a game to play against division-leading Kahuku (9-0), and Kaimuki still has a showdown against McKinley (6-3).
"Hopefully, Kahuku can knock off Moanalua and we take care of business," Grant said.
"Even though Kalani (also on the Bulldogs' schedule) has only one win, they're scrappy, and the McKinley game is going to be tough so if we don't come ready to play, we'll get beat."
