Free tax help offered to those who qualify
Free tax preparation help again is being offered by the AARP, Internal Revenue Service, state Department of Taxation, the armed forces, and various community organizations and educational institutions.
Trained community volunteers will help prepare basic federal and state income tax returns for the elderly, and people who cannot do their own taxes and are in the low-to-moderate income bracket ($38,000 and below).
The following list was provided last week; it is subject to change without notification. You can double-check a site or get the latest update by calling 211. Military personnel and neighbor islanders can call the Aloha United Way at (877) 275-6569 for sites. Information is also available by calling AARP Tax-Aide at (888) 227-7669.
FREE electronic filing (IRS e-file) is available at most volunteer sites.
Among the items you must bring: photo ID; Social Security card (also for spouses and dependents, if applicable); current year's federal and state tax form packets, if received; wage/earnings and interest/dividend statements; copy of last year's income tax returns, if available; bank routing transit number and account number for direct deposit of any refund; other relevant information regarding income and expenses.
Taxpayers are urged to ask about tax credits they may qualify for, such as Earned Income Credit and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled.
The sites are closed on state holidays, unless noted otherwise. No appointment necessary, unless specified.
