Kailua gets all it needs to beat Kapolei
After blowing an opportunity to score earlier in the game, Kailua coach Bernard Victor wasn't sure his team would be able to push a run across against two-time Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Kapolei.
And when Kailua's Brittany Tokunaga popped up in the sixth inning, Victor thought it would be caught.
But Tokunaga's bloop single fell just beyond the glove of Kapolei shortstop Chanti Perry, scoring Krista Dumandan from third base as the Surfriders edged the Hurricanes 1-0 yesterday in the quarterfinals of the OIA Division I softball playoffs at Kailua.
The Surfriders (11-2) earned a berth in next week's state tournament and face defending state champion Mililani (12-1) today at Central Oahu Regional Park at 5:30 p.m. The Trojans defeated Campbell yesterday.
Kapolei (8-6), state champion two years ago and runner-up last year, moves into the playoff's consolation bracket and must finish within the top seven of the 12-team tourney to earn a state berth.
"I was watching the ball all the way," Tokunaga said of her hit. "It was a blooper. I didn't think (it would drop).
"(The pitch) looked liked it was floating and that's what I wanted."
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Dumandan doubled to the center-field fence and was moved to third on a sacrifice by Shyenne Hussey. With the count at 3-2, Tokunaga blooped a pitch by Tajia Acierto just over the head of Perry, who couldn't catch up to the ball in the outfield.
"I didn't think it was going to (drop). Not that pitch," Victor said. "Somehow, it (the ball) went slow. I guess she (Perry) thought it was going farther than that so she didn't go right away."
Kapolei popped out twice to start the top of the seventh and almost threatened when Perry's hit with a runner on base nearly dropped in among three Kailua players in left field before it was caught to end the game.
A pitching duel between Acierto and Ashley Hopfe of Kailua allowed for few looks at scoring by both teams. Acierto allowed only four hits, while Hopfe gave up two hits and got a boost from her defense.
Kailua turned a double play in the top of the sixth when Kapolei's Tehani Kaaihue bunted to shortstop Sydney Kaneshiro. Kaneshiro looked briefly at Kapolei's Ashlynn Ashby, who was on second base, before throwing to first to get Kaaihue out.
Ashby took off during Kaneshiro's throw, but Kailua relayed the ball from first to third to tag Ashby out and end the inning.
