Hawaii's Lajola wins, loses Down Under
Dennis Lajola of Aiea teamed up with Christian Vitulli of Kenya to win his second-round doubles match in the juniors draw of the Australian Open today.
Lajola and Vitulli swept the Croatian team of Luka Belic and Antonio Veic 6-2, 6-4 and advance to the third round against Dusan Lojda of the Czech Republic and Kei Nishikori of Japan.
The 16-year old was swept out of the singles competition by Jaak Poldma of Estonia 6-3, 6-3 yesterday.
» Former University of Hawaii player Malino Oda teamed with American Nicholas Moxley to win their doubles match at the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger yesterday on the Big Island.
Oda and Moxley defeated Ti Chen of Chinese Taipei and Kyu Tae Im of South Koera 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Wahine picked second in WAC softball poll
The University of Hawaii softball team was chosen to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll released yesterday.
Hawaii, which finished 31-21 last year, was picked to finish behind Fresno State. Nevada, San Jose State, Utah State, New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech followed UH in the poll.
First baseman Tyleen Tausaga and catcher Kaulana Gould of Hawaii were selected to the preseason All-WAC team.
UH scrimmages Chaminade on Feb. 1 and Feb. 7 and opens the season against Texas-Arlington in the Paradise Classic on Feb. 9.
