RAINBOW WAHINE BASKETBALL
Short-handed Wahine fall
From staff and wire services
BOISE, Idaho » The Hawaii women forgot how to finish a basketball game and earn a victory last night.
The Rainbow Wahine, down to nine players after coach Jim Bolla suspended Saundra Cariaga, Pam Tambini and Alofa Toiaivao, scored just one point in the last 6 minutes, 32 seconds after taking a one-point lead on a free throw by Tanya Smith.
Boise State closed out the Western Athletic Conference game with a 10-1 run for an 83-75 win, extending UH's losing streak to four games.
The win was the first for the Broncos over the Rainbow Wahine at the Taco Bell Arena in five games since the teams first played here in 2001.
Bolla suspended the players indefinitely for violation of team policy following Saturday's loss to Fresno State. The players were sent back to Honolulu and did not accompany the team to Boise.
The suspensions cost the Wahine (10-6, 1-4) two of their top four rebounders. Toiaivao is averaging 6.4 boards a game and Tambini is averaging 6.2 rebounds a game. They also contribute a combined 24 points a game.
That was a setback against the Broncos. Boise State outhustled the Wahine, the top rebounding team in the conference, on the boards, holding a commanding 49-28 advantage.
Bolla said the suspensions were no excuse for the loss.
"We had our opportunities, but could not score a basket in the final 7 minutes," Bolla said. "We got totally outplayed physically. They got every loose ball."
The last UH field goal came on a bank shot by Brittany Grice with 7:02 to go.
Twenty-one of Boise State's rebounds came at the offensive end and, all too often, a Bronco player wasn't the first person to touch the ball.
"The ball would come to us and we would fumble it and they would pick it up. We didn't have good hands tonight with our post players," Bolla said.
Boise State (11-7, 3-3) led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but the Wahine battled back on the strength of 17 points by Amy Sanders and 14 by Janevia Taylor, who made four 3-pointers in the span, to trail 47-45 at intermission.
Taylor's trey -- her fifth of the night -- to start the second half gave UH its first lead at 48-47. Moments later Michelle Hessing hit two free throws as the Broncos regained the lead.
Except for brief UH leads during a 2-minute period right after the midway point of the second half, the Wahine were chasing the Broncos.
Bolla relied on six players with brief stints by the other three. Sensing they were getting tired, he called timeout just before the final media timeout to give them a double break.
"The fact is, we failed to execute down the end and we got our butts kicked on the glass," Bolla said.
Sanders led the Wahine with 20 points. Taylor had 19 and Grice scored 18.
Taylor's five 3-pointers were one short of tying the UH single-game record shared by Jade Abele, Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe and Elizabeth Sirchia.
The Wahine return to Oahu today and play Utah State on Thursday night at 7 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
