Paddles up on the Ala Wai
Sunday's 21st annual Ala Wai Challenge brings teams of rowers out for a day of races and Hawaiian games. Events begin at 8 a.m. at Ala Wai Neighborhood Park, with the double-hulled canoe procession and a performance by the Royal Hawaiian Band. The races follow, with six-person teams rowing quarter-mile sprints and competing in games such as stone bowling and spear throwing.
For observers there will also be food and craft booths, lomilomi (Hawaiian massage) and entertainment by Melveen Leed, Mike Kaaawa, Ernie Cruz Jr., Brother Noland and others.
The event this year honors legendary surfers Wally and Keali'ipu'aimoku "Moku" Froiseth, founders of the Waikiki Surf Club (pictured).
The Challenge is a benefit for the Waikiki Community Center's child-care center and normally raises more than $30,000. Call 923-1802.
