Souza wins sponsor's exemption to Turtle Bay
Stan Souza won yesterday's invitational qualifier to earn a sponsor's exemption into this week's Turtle Bay Championship.
Souza shot a an even-par 72 to tie Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame member Larry Stubblefield. Souza then defeated Stubblefield with a par on the first playoff hole.
The Turtle Bay Championship is a Champions Tour event.
Hawaii boxers earn state championships
Four boxers won bouts on Saturday to earn Hawaii state boxing titles and trips to the U.S. championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., March 3-12.
The state title winners are: Amadeo Ezzo-White Jr. (125-pound division), Isaac Arasato (132), Filipo Toelau (178), Chad Davis (201-plus).
4 Hawaii teams place high at Keehi Lagoon
Four University of Hawaii sailing teams placed first through fourth at the 10-team Rainbow Intersectional at Keehi Lagoon yesterday.
The UH Red team took first place with 71 points, followed by the Wahine team with 72. UH Green was third with 77 points, followed by UH Blue with 80.
UH's coed sailing team is ranked first in the nation and the Wahine team is ranked fourth, according to the school's media relations department.
DIVISION II BASKETBALL
Hawaii-Hilo 84, Chaminade 79
Joe Travis got a double-double in his first career start with 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Vulcans (12-5, 2-2) to a PacWest victory over the Silverswords (12-5, 5-1) on Saturday night in Hilo.
Chris Reaves led Chaminade with 27 points, and Zack Whiting added 26.
