WAHINE BASKETBALL
Fresno bullies UH
FRESNO, Calif. » Fresno State ended Hawaii's three-game road winning streak in convincing fashion yesterday with a 77-52 Western Athletic Conference women's basketball victory at the Save Mart Center before 3,124 fans.
The Bulldogs trailed 4-1, then held the Rainbow Wahine scoreless for 5 minutes, 10 seconds during a 12-0 run. That was followed by two spurts where they outscored UH 14-6 and 12-2 to eventually take a 41-22 lead at the half.
Nothing changed to begin the second half, as FSU (13-4, 5-0) raced to a 57-26 lead with a 16-4 start.
The Wahine (10-5, 1-3) had difficulty handling the Bulldogs' trap when UH played the ball to the wings. The Wahine turned the ball over six times in the first 5 minutes and were guilty of 26 turnovers in the game.
It did not help the UH offense when leading scorer Amy Sanders went to the bench with her second foul at the 15:30 mark of the first half. She did not score her first basket until 13:30 of the second half and finished with four points.
Hawaii did not make consecutive baskets until 12 minutes into the game. The biggest Wahine run was 5-0 late in the second half and FSU holding a 32-point lead.
"The Bulldogs' pressure was just really, really good and they must have had 10 layups in the first half because they just beat us down the floor," said Hawaii coach Jim Bolla.
Both teams took 66 shots from the field. The Bulldogs made 29 (44 percent), and UH connected on just 21 (32 percent). The Wahine also missed all 15 3-point attempts, ending a streak of 113 consecutive games in which they had made at least one trey.
"The Bulldogs are probably the most athletic team in the conference. If they keep playing the way they did today, no one will touch them," Bolla said. "They are way ahead of Louisiana Tech the way they are playing now."
The Wahine started with a zone defense, modified a bit from their 2-3 to a 1-3-1 in hopes of offsetting Fresno State's quickness. However, the Bulldogs attacked that defense better than they did on Thursday against Utah State and quickly took control of the game with the help of the UH turnovers.
"We stood and waited too much instead of stepping toward the ball," Bolla said. "We did not shoot well although we got some good looks."
The Wahine travel to Idaho today to play Boise State tomorrow night.
"We can't change what just happened. We got a butt-kicking. What is important is how we respond tomorrow and how we do at Boise. We have to forget Fresno or we will get our butts kicked again," Bolla said.
"We need a split on this trip, then come home for two games (Utah State and Nevada) that are winnable games."
The victory increased FSU's winning streak to six consecutive games. The Bulldogs have won five of the last six meetings against the Wahine.
The 25-point loss was the biggest since Bolla became head coach and the worst since LaTech handed UH a 38-point defeat on Feb. 12, 2004.
