Nakamoto receives Coach of the Year honors
Pearl City's Leigh Nakamoto was named the volunteer coach of the year for 2005 by USA Judo.
Nakamoto, the founder of the Kapolei Judo Club, was honored for his heavy involvement not only with his club, but with the development of judo at many levels including high school.
With the honor, Nakamoto is now eligible for the U.S. Olympic Committee's annual coach of the year award.
Hawaii boxing championships this weekend
The 2006 Hawaii LBC 39 Men's and Women's Regional Boxing Championships are tomorrow and Sunday at the Palolo District Park gym.
Several defending champions are participating this year, with open division winners moving on to the 2006 USA Boxing National Championships in May.
Bouts begin at 7 p.m. tomorrow and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Admission for each day is $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens or children under 12.
Silverswords take care of Vulcans in Hilo
Chris Nelson hit three of his four 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 19 points to help Chaminade earn a 95-83 win over host Hawaii-Hilo last night.
The Silverswords, ranked third in the Pacific region, improved to 12-4, 5-0 in the PacWest. Hilo dropped to 11-5 and 1-2.
