Jungle music hits Sistina this weekend
GET READY for a little "Jungle Warfare" this weekend at Cafe Sistina.
The King Street restaurant has long been known for its just-under-the-radar parties, and the newest one to sprout up here is no exception. "Stereotype" is a new monthly that gets its start on Saturday, hosted by DJ Thread.
"It's (going to be) all jungle music, which isn't heard on the island," said Thread via e-mail. "I love this music and (there) isn't a scene here so I wanted to throw some parties of my own."
Doors open at 10 p.m. on Saturday for "Stereotype," with DJs Toki and MetalX joining Thread on the decks. Call 596-0061 or e-mail thread808@gmail.com ...
ANOTHER BIG show this weekend is Saturday's "Winter Island Music Festival" at the Waikiki Shell.
Local favorite Fiji will headline the concert, with opening acts to include Ho'onu'a, B.E.T., One Groove, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, RawSun and Sista Robi Kahakalau.
Grass seats are priced at $17.50 for this one; listen to KCCN FM-100 and you'll have a chance to win some for free. Call 296-1003 ...
MORE ABOUT GILLIOM: The singer is looking for hula dancers to accompany her on a tour to Japan later this year. Auditions are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow; call 489-0179 for an appointment ... Artist Groove Network has its last call at Maharaja Ultra Lounge tomorrow night. The promoters are tight-lipped about their next party but promise to resurface on Fridays soon ... Need a good laugh? Head over to the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Saturday for the "All Star Comedy Jam," starting at 8 p.m. Featured guests are the "Legendary Queen of Comedy" Sommore and Lavell Crawford, with tickets priced at $35 and $45 ...
TOMORROW NIGHT'S "Rumble on the Rock 8" should be full of action -- a welterweight tournament is scheduled, with UFC brawlers Frank Triggs and Dave Menne, Anderson Silva, Yushin Okami, Jake Shields, Carlos Condit, Renato Verissimo and local boy Ron Jhun listed as participants. Wesley "Cabbage" Correira will also face off against Eric "Butterbean" Esch in the night's main event ...
AND FINALLY, a little blatant self-promotion: Come on down to Anna Bannanas on Saturday at 9 p.m. for the first-ever "Star-Bulletin Rock Showcase."
The Crud, Ekto Gamat, the Honolulu Blue Devils, Mad Theory, the Malcognitas and MVA all have members with a Star-Bulletin connection, and they'll all be playing this weekend. I'll be there to host ...
