Momentum will play an important role in OIA
When Radford visits Mililani tonight, momentum in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West boys basketball race will be at stake.
Radford, coming off a loss at pesky Pearl City, is 3-1 in league play (8-5 overall) and dropped two spots to No. 10 in Monday's Star-Bulletin Top 10 poll.
Mililani, whose schedule includes a win over No. 7 Baldwin, is quickly coming together under first-year head coach Hiram Akina.
An amazing comeback win over Campbell gave the home fans plenty to cheer about. When the Trojans play well, they have one of the loudest home crowds in any league.
Even without the homecourt edge, Mililani is a team that Radford coach Kai Enos has kept an eye on.
"Mililani's tough. They've always hustled," said Enos, who saw the Trojans at the Punahou Holiday Classic and also scouted them in an overtime win over Kapolei on Saturday.
"They're athletic, and it'll come down to how we execute. Free throws are key," Enos added.
His team has struggled at times from the line, though the Rams have two of the West's better shooters in Michael Sooto and Gary Satterwhite.
The loss at Pearl City may give Radford a little more urgency.
"I told our kids, I don't think anybody's going undefeated. We'll learn from it," Enos said.
Crusade on hold
Jeremiah Masoli has earned a place among the top guards in the state with his leadership and smart decisions on the floor.
The Saint Louis guard hit a rough spot on Saturday, however, during a double-overtime loss to Kamehameha.
Masoli shot just 3-for-14, finishing with seven points and four turnovers against Kamehameha's fullcourt traps, man and zone defenses.
Center Scott Smith, meanwhile, had his best game of the season.
The 6-foot-6 senior scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to dominate the paint.
He made four of his six free-throw tries in the fourth quarter, a period in which he had 10 points and eight boards to help Saint Louis stay in the game.
However, with his team up by two points and less than a minute left, he missed two foul shots.
Smith usually rotates and plays big minutes, though normally not an entire quarter as he did on Saturday.
Fatigue may have affected his free-throw shooting, but he bounced back and hit both of his free throws during the two extra periods.
Saint Louis shot 59 percent from the line (13-for-22).
Kamehameha was 26-for-34 (76 percent), and that was certainly the biggest factor in the game.
The Warriors improved to 4-0 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (13-2 overall) and No. 3 in the Top 10.
