Big names at Hula Bowl signing tonight
Former Heisman Trophy winners along with players and coaches in Saturday's Hula Bowl will sign autographs today at Dave & Buster's at 6:45 p.m.
Scheduled to appear are Rashaan Salaam, Billy Sims, Charles White, Andre Ware, Dick Kazmaier, Howard "Hopalong" Cassidy, Mike Rozier, George Rogers and University of Hawaii players Lono Manners, Tanuvasa Moe, Kila Kamakawiwo'ole and Brandon Eaton.
Also, the Little League World Series champions from West Oahu will receive their game-day jerseys from the championship game during the Hula Bowl's pregame show. The jerseys were purchased by Subway Hawaii.
Seasiders' Smylie and Reaves earn honors
Brigham Young-Hawaii's Austin Smylie and Chaminade's Chris Reaves were named PacWest co-players of the week yesterday.
Smylie hit 13 of 14 shots and had 29 points in a win at Notre Dame de Namur last Saturday, and Reaves averaged 27.5 points and nine assists in two wins last week.
Hawaii sailors host spring opener
The University of Hawaii sailing teams start their spring season with the Rainbow Invitational this weekend at the Marine Education and Training Center at Keehi Lagoon.
The No. 3 UH coed team and No. 4 Rainbow Wahine team will be joined by squads from Portland State, Santa Barbara City College, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara. Returning to her alma mater is Portland State assistant Kelly McCoy.
Races start at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Free tennis clinic at Waikoloa on Sunday
The Hilton Waikoloa Village will host Keiki Tennis Day on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. with dynamic stretching, tips and a clinic by local junior players.
The resort will also host a teaching workshop on Saturday at 8 a.m. Both events are held in conjunction with the Waikoloa Challenger tournament that starts with qualifying matches on Saturday.
Canoe challenge honors Froiseths
Wally and Moku Froiseth, founders of the Waikiki Surf Club and outstanding surfers in their day, will be honored for the contributions to Hawaii's water sports and Hawaiian culture at the 21st Ala Wai Challenge on Jan. 29.
Festivities begin at 8 a.m. and include hula, canoe sprint races and Makahiki games. The event is a benefit for the Waikiki Community Center.
Businesses and community groups can enter 12-person teams -- six to paddle and six to play Makahiki games -- for a fee of $400. The fee includes lunch and a T-shirt for each participant.
