Catch the beat at the library
Contemporary jazz drummers Robert Jospé and Kevin Davis will perform in a series of lecture-demonstration programs in the public libraries from Sunday through Feb. 3.
The free one-hour program will explore African cultural influences in American, Central American and South American dance music, covering swing, rock, salsa, mambo, calypso, reggae, merengue, samba and bossa nova.
The program will feature history of these musical forms and demonstrations on a variety of percussion instruments. It is suited for ages 5 and up.

Birthday luau
Celebrate the 171st anniversary of the birth of King William Charles Lunalilo at a grand luau Jan. 28 at Lunalilo Home in Hawaii Kai. A traditional 12 item menu will be offered for eating on site or take-out.
The luau runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with entertainment by Aaron Young & Friends, Tony Conjugacion, Keawe Lopes and Melveen Leed. Tickets are $30. Call 395-1000 or 394-1464.
Cooking lessons
The Kahala Mandarin Oriental Culinary Academy offers these cooking classes in January. All classes run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 739-8780.
Do the Rice Thing: A demonstration with a menu of Green Pea and Saffron Risotto, Salmon Chasuke, Thai Black Rice Pudding, Rice Soufflé with Stewed Figs; Saturday, $65.
All About Vanilla: Bill Wiedmann of Singing Dog Vanilla leads a hands-on class in using vanilla with Scallops and Saffron Sauce, Blueberry Parfait, Creme Anglaise and Poached Lobster; Jan. 28. Cost is $115.
Eat healthy
The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific hosts two classes on healthy cooking next week. Both will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Frear Cafe at the hospital. Cost is $30 per class. Reservation required; call 566-3780.

For the pros
Food-service professionals with an interest in butchery can learn the basics in two Kapiolani Community College classes. Both classes are taught by chef-instructor Dale Thomas and incorporate lectures, course work and hands-on practice. They run from 3 to 8 p.m. over three Saturdays. Cost is $180 per series.
