'HAPPY SIXTH TO THE PIPE!': Derin DeRego of Star 101.9, left, arrived Tuesday as Jed Roa hosted a private early-evening sixth-anniversary party for the Pipeline Cafe. Anyone who thinks it's a big deal for a nightclub to stay open for one year should consider the odds of a club surviving for six -- Roa has not only kept "the Pipe" open for six years, but also developed it into a first-rate venue for concerts and CD-release parties. Pipeline waitress Joleen Kobayashi joined Roa in welcoming DeRego to the party.

GOOD READING AWAITS WITHIN: Hank Faufaasau, right, was the host of a book-signing party honoring poet Pat Matsueda and epigrammist Thomas Farber Wednesday evening at Hank's Cafe Honolulu on Nuuanu Street. Among the many memorable one-liners in Farber's book, "Truth Be Told," is this one: "A writer: Someone willing to hurt others." Ouch!
