Another tight battle in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu came down to one of the most basic of fundamental skills.
Kamehameha put on a free-throw shooting clinic in the second overtime, pulling out a 63-59 win over Saint Louis last night at McCabe Gym.
The hard-earned win propelled the Warriors to 3-0 in ILH play (12-2 overall). Kamehameha, ranked No. 4 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, sank 11 of 15 free-throw tries in the second OT.
Jacob Ho, a senior forward, came through with a clutch, game-tying shot with 5 seconds left in regulation to save the Warriors.
"I wanted to be the man to take the big shot," he said. "To help my team in a big situation."
Ho finished with 17 points, making seven of his 10 free-throw attempts after regulation. Randy Cummings added 14 points and Rykin Enos tallied 10 to go with his stabilizing floor leadership.
Scott Smith turned in a scintillating effort for the Crusaders. Smith hustled for 20 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore Cole Shidaki finished with 19 points, including three treys. Third-ranked Saint Louis dropped to 1-2 in league play (6-2 overall).
In all, Kamehameha made 26 of 34 tries from the line (76 percent). Saint Louis finished 13-for-22 at the line (59 percent).
"Everything we do, we try to replicate game scenarios," coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "Free-throw shooting wins and loses ballgames, everyone knows that. We're still looking for consistency."
Ho made 11 of 14 foul shots in all.
"After every drill, we try to get our free throws in, when we're tired," he said.
Saint Louis led 44-42 with 14 seconds left in regulation when Smith, who amassed 10 points and eight rebounds in the fourth quarter, went to the foul line. He missed two tries, giving Kamehameha a huge break.
That allowed Ho to score on a 14-foot pullup jumper from the left elbow, tying the game at 44 with 5 seconds left in regulation.
Saint Louis' bench tried to call timeout -- they had four remaining -- but to no avail as the Crusaders passed the ball in and failed to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
Faulty shooting at the charity stripe continued to plague Saint Louis. Ho sank three of his four tries at the line as Kamehameha took a 47-44 lead with 1:08 left in overtime. After a turnover by Jeremiah Masoli, Andrew Godinet made a pair of line-drive foul shots to give the Warriors a 49-44 lead with 35 ticks left in the extra period.
After a miss by Cameron Bayne, Kamehameha had the ball with 28 seconds left. However, a 5-second violation gave the Crusaders a break, and Shidaki swished a trey to bring the Crusaders within 49-47 with 24 seconds left in overtime.
Ho went back to the line and made one of his two tries with 18 seconds to go. Down 3, Smith hustled after a 3-point miss by Masoli for a putback, drawing a foul on the play. This time, he swished his free throw and tied the game at 50 with 10 seconds left in the first OT.
The Warriors broke Saint Louis' fullcourt press and Ho missed a 15-foot bank shot as time dwindled down. Kanoa Mokiao hustled for a putback after time expired. Officials met for a minute to make sure the call was correct.
