Dinners celebrate German wines
Fritz Hasselbach, owner of Germany's Gunderloch Winery, hosts two winemaker dinners this month, featuring his award-winning Rieslings:
Alan Wong's restaurant: Jan. 23 prix-fixe menu by chef Lance Kosaka includes Citrus-Grilled Hiramasa (with Riesling "Estate" 2004), Pan-Roasted Day Boat Scallops (Alan Wong's Cuvee Riesling Kabinet 2004), Pot Au Feu (Riesling Auslese Three Star 2003) and Trio of Desserts (Riesling Auslese Nachenheimer Rothenberg 2003). Indigo Eurasian Cuisine: 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 five-course menu by chef Glenn Chu includes Pan-Seared Quail on Mint and Pine Nut Coulis (with Jean Baptiste Riesling Kabinett 2004), Pan-Seared Salmon with Fennel Curry Sauce (Pinot Noir, tasting room selection), Smoked Sonoma Duck Breasts with Saffron Pinenut Rice (Riesling Auslese Nackenheim Rothenberg 2003), Roasted Kampachi on Kona Bitter Greens (Diva Riesling Spatlese 2004) and Maytag Blue Cheese on Puff Pastry (Riesling Gold Cap Auslese Nackenheim Rothenberg 2003). Mix a martini with a master
Cocktail mixmaster Dale DeGroff presents a series of martini seminars this month at the Halekulani. Participants will taste and mix drinks using fresh ingredients, discuss cocktail lore and learn recipes.
"The Early Years": 6 p.m. Thursday. How the martini evolved from sweet to dry.
"Vodka and Beyond": 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24. What is the martini in the new millennium?

The organics of winemaking
Master sommelier Roberto Viernes conducts a wine tasting of six wines made from organically grown and biodynamically grown grapes, 5 p.m. Jan. 25 at Formaggio in the Market City Shopping Center.
Dr. Marlon Rimando will lead a discussion on wine and its effects on health during the session, "Organics and Biodynamics: What's It All About?"

Prove it. Try out for the ultimate brainiac game show, "Jeopardy!" Members of the shows "Clue Crew" and official contestant coordinators will be interviewing potential contestants in Honolulu next month.
To put your name in the hat, register online via www.jeopardy.com (click on "Be a Contestant" and fill out the form). You can also register to interview in Los Angeles, Las Vegas or Phoenix if you're planning a trip to one of those cities.
