Warriors in a walk
There's nothing shallow about Jesse Nakanishi's approach to the game of basketball.
In fact, he likes depth. The Kamehameha boys coach likes depth so much, he sent waves of Warriors against Maryknoll, stifling the Spartans in a 43-37 win last night.
A pensive crowd at Damien gym saw reserve swingman Randy Cummings hit two big 3-pointers in the pivotal third quarter to spark the Warriors. Fourth-ranked Kamehameha (12-2 overall) improved to 3-0 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play.
Sixth-ranked Maryknoll (12-7 overall) dropped its second league game in as many outings.
Tyler Tsukazaki scored 16 points, but didn't get many open looks against Kamehameha's arsenal of defenses. No other Spartan scored more than four points.
"We tried to mix it up," Nakanishi said.
The effectiveness of the box-and-1 is something he'd rather keep secret.
"It was just a little twist to keep them off balance," Nakanishi said. "Tsukazaki is a great player. We just wanted him to get tough shots."
The Warriors opened with a man-to-man defense, brought in a platoon of five reserves and extended to a full-court zone trap. They mixed 2-3 zone and man defenses before settling into a box-and-1 against Tsukazaki, one of the streakiest long-range shooters in the state.
Guard Andrew Godinet drew the assignment on Tsukazaki, who scored eight hard-earned points in the second half.
Maryknoll led 22-20 after Tsukazaki drove for a bucket midway through the third quarter. However, Cummings took a pass from Jesse Moniz and hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give Kamehameha the lead for good, 23-22. He added another trey moments later, creating a nice cushion for the Warriors in the midst of a tight game.
"When he's on fire, watch out," Nakanishi said of Cummings. "He's worked very hard."
Rykin Enos closed out the quarter with a 3-point play. Enos, who finished with a team-high 13 points, gave the Warriors a 31-24 lead.
Enos made four of his six fourth-quarter attempts from the free-throw line as the Warriors put the game out of reach. They extended their lead to 40-29 after Kanoa Mokiao hustled for a put-back shot with just over a minute left to play.
Kamehameha outrebounded Maryknoll 26-19.
"We're very deep, and we never know who's gonna bring it," Nakanishi said. "It's a good problem to have."
