Mililani rally stuns Campbell
If it wasn't the numbers, it was certainly a matter of heart.
After struggling from the floor for three quarters, Mililani got a spark from defensive whiz Jordan Torres to pull out a remarkable 54-48 win over Campbell last night.
The win boosted Mililani to 3-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association West play. Campbell slipped to 2-1.
The Trojans trailed by 15 on their home court early and were down by 14 in the fourth quarter when they made their comeback.
Campbell still led 47-46 when reserve forward Jayden Delizo missed a tough 10-foot baseline jumper. Ken Moses rebounded and found Torres open for an easy layup.
Torres' go-ahead shot, during a 21-1 run, gave the Trojans the lead for good, 48-47, with 1:27 left.
"Coach said, 'Just play tight 'D' and don't let them have any easy shots," said Torres, who scored two baskets and a free throw and had two steals and two assists during the run. "I was just waiting for my chance like everyone else."
The Trojans led 53-47 with 25 seconds to go when Delizo made a free throw to bring the Sabers within five with 12 seconds left. But the Sabers got no closer.
Moses finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and three assists. Olmos overcame a cold-shooting touch to finish with 10 points, including two key 3-pointers during the final quarter.
"Our team just stepped up. We have only three seniors, but everyone showed they've got heart," said Moses, a senior swingman. "Jordan really stepped up with great 'D' on their best guard."
Low posts David Otte (nine rebounds) and Brandon Dela Cruz (seven boards) helped Mililani control the glass in the pivotal final quarter.
"I didn't say nothing," Mililani coach Hiram Akina said. "They just knew they had to protect their house. They knew they'd come back. That's why I kept Donovan in. His shots were missing, but he had to keep shooting. It was a true team effort."
