RAINBOW WAHINE BASKETBALL
Louisiana Tech holds off Wahine in OT
History did not repeat itself last night despite the Hawaii women's basketball team taking Louisiana Tech into overtime at the Stan Sheriff Center for the second consecutive year.
The Lady Techsters twice took six-point leads in overtime and made them stand up for a 71-66 victory in a Western Athletic Conference game in front of 928 fans, the largest crowd of the season.
The Rainbow Wahine (10-3, 1-1) had beaten LaTech (11-3, 3-0) for the first time in OT here last year.
Both teams had opportunities to break a 58-all tie in the final 1:43 of regulation, but could not get the ball to filter through the net until overtime.
Consecutive three-point plays by Tamika Kursh and Ty Moore sandwiched around a missed one-and-one chance by UH's Cassidy Chretien gave LaTech a 70-66 lead with 2:57 left in the extra period.
The Wahine did not get closer than four points the rest of the way in losing their first game after eight straight wins. Hawaii was just 2-for-6 from the foul line in the overtime period.
"We had plenty of opportunities to win this game," said UH coach Jim Bolla. "We missed some free throws, made some poor decisions on defense and fouled them. You can't do that against the No. 1 team in the conference.
"We missed some easy layups, then went down the other end and fouled.
"They did a good job of penetrating, got the fouls and made enough of them to win."
The Lady Techsters were 20-for-32 from the line, and UH was 8-for-14.
The game did not turn into a track meet as Bolla feared. Both defenses were tough at times, but UH couldn't get a stop in overtime when it counted.
"We didn't get our hands up in their faces or even to get deflections," said Pam Tambini who led UH with 16 points.
"I thought we executed really well on offense except at the end of the second half."
The Wahine fell behind 21-10 in the first 10 minutes, 36 seconds of action. They missed nine of their first 12 field-goal attempts and turned the ball over seven times.
After Shan Moore's basket gave LaTech an 11-point lead with 9:24 left in the half, the Wahine put together a 9-1 run to cut their deficit to 22-19. Tambini had five points during the rally.
LaTech's Tasha Williams made two free throws, but they were offset by two from Brittany Grice. Tambini then knocked down her second 3-pointer to tie the score at 24 with 5:17 to play. The Wahine went almost five minutes without committing a turnover during the comeback.
A jumper by Dalia Solia and one of two free throws the next trip down the floor put UH on top 29-26 with 2:27 on the clock.
Aarica Ray-Boyd pulled the Lady Techsters ahead 30-29 with consecutive layups, but Tambini's jumper from the top of the key gave UH a 31-30 lead. However, Ray-Boyd made it seven consecutive points with a three-point play to send LaTech to the locker room with a 33-31 lead.
In the first 8:10 of the second half, the teams traded baskets, with UH tying the score at 41-all on a layup by Amy Sanders off a no-look feed by Alofa Toiaivao just before a media timeout with 11:50 to go.
The score was tied at 46, 50 and 52 over the next five minutes before Eboni Mangum scored consecutive baskets on baseline drives from the left side to put LaTech up 56-52 with 4:21 to play.
The Wahine responded with a 6-2 spurt and tied the score again at 58 with 1:43 to play on Tambini's break-away layup.
Hawaii will try to rebound when it hosts New Mexico State tomorrow at 7 p.m.
