Buffanblu can't slow Raiders' run through ILH
Despite a few preseason losses, No. 2 Iolani reminded everyone last night that the four-time defending state champion is still the team to beat.
Vinny Nip scored a game-high 22 points and Kawika Shoji added 13 points and four blocks as the host Raiders handled the top-ranked Buffanblu 62-45 last night to remain undefeated in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu at 3-0.
Miah Ostrowski scored 15 points, and Danny Cho added 14, including three 3-pointers, for the Buffanblu (2-1).
"They were without a doubt the best team on the floor tonight," Buffanblu coach Greg Tacon said. "They were more aggressive than us, more physical than us and more hungry than us."
The Raiders were on fire from the 3-point line, connecting on seven treys, including five in the first half. They meticulously picked apart the Buffanblu's 1-3-1 zone defense to continually find open shots en route to a 28-22 halftime lead.
"We've improved a lot since our trip to Oregon (in December)," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "We started using a lot of guys once we realized how deep we are, and we're using 10, 12, 13 of our guys now."
Both teams were regularly subbing five players at a time in the first half to try to stay fresh, but it seemed to do more good for the Raiders as they forced turnovers on four of Punahou's first five second-half possessions and opened the third quarter with a 12-0 run to take a 40-22 lead.
The Buffanblu turned the ball over six times in the quarter and only a 6-0 run in the final 1:17 kept the game from getting completely out of hand.
"We learned in our first game against them (a Buffanblu 67-56 victory) that Punahou is a great team and can come back fast," Shoji said. "We knew we had to play a full two halves and crank up the intensity, and that was the key in the second half."
A 3-pointer by Cho cut the Iolani lead to 49-40 with 2:47 left, but the Raiders knocked down 11 of their final 14 free throws to ice their second win in five days against a top-five team in the Star-Bulletin's Top 10. Iolani defeated then-No. 4 Saint Louis 60-57 on Friday and has managed to hold serve on its home court with two big wins early in the season.
"A lot of people think maybe Iolani is down this year and we're beatable, but we don't care what people think," Shoji said. "We just care about the team and what we're doing and working as hard as we can."
The undersized Raiders outrebounded the Buffanblu 27-16 and held 6-foot-7 Buffanblu center Spencer McLachlin to just two points.
