Ostrowski’s jumper saves Punahou
The Buffanblu guard comes through with 7 seconds left for a 47-46 victory over Maryknoll
Miah Ostrowski swished a 16-foot baseline jumper with 7 seconds to play, giving top-ranked Punahou a 47-46 win over Maryknoll last night.
The win at Mid-Pacific gym gave Punahou a 2-0 start in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (14-3 overall). Maryknoll, ranked No. 7 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, lost its league opener (11-6 overall).
Ostrowski's shot over the tough defense of Tommy Nguyen was the sixth and final lead change of a frantic second half. After a combined three timeouts after Ostrowski's shot, Tyler Tsukazaki received the inbounds pass and dribbled up the left sideline. He was met by 6-foot-7 Spencer McLachlin at the baseline, dribbled back to the wing and missed a 20-foot prayer that hit the top of the backboard.
That ended an upset bid by Maryknoll, which rallied from several small deficits only to come up just a point short.
"It's a heartbreaker. This was about execution and coaching," Maryknoll coach Blaine Gier said. "The boys did their job. It came down to what we wanted."
After struggling from the field, Ostrowski finished with 12 points. He shot just 3-for-12, but scored seven key points for Punahou in the final quarter. McLachlin finished with a game-high 13 points and seven rebounds.
As a team, Punahou shot 40 percent from the field (17 of 42), including just 3-for-11 from 3-point range. The Buffanblu shot only 47 percent from the foul line (9-for-19).
Junior forward Jordan Ho-Ching led Maryknoll with 11 points. After picking up three fouls in the first half, he bounced back with nine points in a pivotal third quarter. Tsukazaki and Travis Liu added 10 points apiece.
Liu's free throw had given Maryknoll a 47-46 lead in the final minute of play.
Tsukazaki, one of the top scorers in the state, shot 2-for-8 from the floor and did not have a field goal until the final quarter.
Maryknoll shot 43 percent from the floor (14 of 35), including 6-for-12 from the arc.
The Spartans, like Punahou, struggled at the line (8-for-17). It was their second close loss to the Buffanblu this season. Punahou won a nonconference game over Maryknoll, 61-53.
Gier played his reserves earlier and liberally from the start, nearly matching Punahou's platoon system. The Buffanblu threatened to pull away after McLachlin hit two foul shots for a 15-7 lead late in the first quarter.
Maryknoll settled down against Punahou's 2-2-1 fullcourt press and went on a 10-2 run. Liu's 3-pointer from the right wing tied the game at 17. Punahou backup center Kealii Frank's follow shot at the buzzer gave the Buffanblu a 22-20 lead at intermission.
Neither team shot well in the first half. Punahou was just 8-for-23 from the field (35 percent) and 5-for-10 from the foul line.
Maryknoll was only 5-for-19 from the floor (26 percent) and 1-for-6 from the foul line, but made four of seven tries from the arc to stay close.
