Womanly wines
"Women in Wine" is the theme of a wine dinner to be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Hale Koa Hotel.
Lisa Gmur of Grand Cru will host the dinner, to feature the creations of female winemakers, including Iron Horse Russian Cuvee, Ponzi Pinot Gris, Domaine Carneros Pinot Noir, SilvioNardi Rosso di Montalcino and Wynns Shiraz.
Chef Rolf Walter's menu includes Gems of Two Seas (ahi tartar and smoked Scottish salmon), Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras, Potato-Crusted Island Mahimahi, Herb-Crusted Oven Roasted Tenderloin of Beef and Succulent Lobster, with dessert of Parisian Cheese Cake.

The Hale Koa plans three wine dinners this year. The next, "Thunder from Down Under," will be in April, hosted by Alan Jahns of JMD Wines.
Wines of Carneros
Wines from the Carneros region of Napa Valley, Calif., will be featured in a Next Generation Dinner on Jan. 17 at Alan Wong's King Street restaurant.
Chef Wade Ueoka's menu: Mustard-Crusted Ahi with Warm Pipikaula (with Saintsbury Carneros Vin Gris of Pinot Noir), Pan-Roasted Day Boat Scallops with Chinese Ja Chai Relish (Cuvaison Carneros Chardonnay), Grilled Maui Cattle Company Beef Tenderloin with Pomegranate Curry Sauce and Red-Wine Braised Veal Shank Roulade (Robert Sinskey Winery Carneros Pinot Noir).

New Year's lesson
Chef Chih Chieh Chang teaches a cooking class featuring Chinese New Year specialties at 10 a.m. Jan. 21 at Shanghai Bistro.
Among dishes to be featured are jai, the vegetarian "monks food" that is a holiday classic, and a Shanghai-style mochi cake.
The class will include recipes, sampling and lunch. Cost is $20.
The Lunar New Year, welcoming the Year of the Dog, is Jan. 29.
Also at Shanghai Bistro, the cabaret show "Broadway at the Shanghai Bistro" has been expanded to two performances a week -- 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
The show stars Don Conover on keyboards and Rex Nockengust singing. Admission is $20, including pupu platter and a drink. Seatings begin at 7:30 p.m. Those having dinner may view the show at no extra charge.
