Radford’s defense smothers Hurricanes
The Radford Rams used their trademark defense and got just enough of an offensive spark to rally past visiting Kapolei 44-30 last night at James Alegre Gym.
The regular-season-opening clash between contenders in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West turned into a defensive duel after the first quarter. That suited Radford's 6-foot-5, 270-pound center, Mike Goodman. He scored 14 points and corralled eight rebounds to anchor the Rams in the post.
Guard Gary Satterwhite added 10 points and 10 rebounds and had just one turnover. Mike Sooto added eight points, seven boards and smart ballhandling for the Rams.
"It's so tight in the West, if you hit shots, you'll be the victor," Radford coach Kai Enos said. "The thing about Kapolei the last two years, they really kicked our butts. This is a good win for us. I'm glad we played them here."
Cameron Moody led Kapolei with nine points and 11 rebounds. The Hurricanes, who played without shooting guard Brad Padayao, shot just 31 percent from the floor (11 of 35). The lack of post offense resulted in just four free throws out of 10 attempts. In all, Kapolei had more turnovers (14) than field goals.
Radford outworked Kapolei on the boards 37-21, a key factor in overcoming an early six-point deficit.
"One thing we do at practice is crash the boards, but we didn't do that tonight," Hurricanes coach Gary Ellison said. The absence of Padayao, who is on a football recruiting visit to the mainland, had an effect on the lineup.
"We've won games without Brad before. Moody usually plays inside, but we moved him to the wing," the first-year coach added. "We didn't push the ball."
Radford's swarming defense was up to par, but Kapolei may have been gun-shy.
"It was surprising. Sometimes they weren't taking their shots," Enos said.
"Gary is improving game by game, becoming more of a complete ballplayer. That's what we want to instill in everyone."
The Rams weren't quite scintillating from the field at 33 percent (14 of 43), but got timely 3-point shooting from Satterwhite and Sooto, who made two apiece. The Rams shot 5-for-13 from the arc and 11-for-19 from the free-throw line.
The game started as a run-and-gun shootout. Jerrome Figueroa's breakaway dunk was the highlight of Kapolei's game-opening 12-4 run. Radford committed six turnovers against the Hurricanes' man-to-man defense in the opening quarter, matching its point total.
Momentum turned in the Rams' favor midway through the second quarter.
Radford switched to a 2-3 zone and virtually paralyzed the Kapolei offense. Sparked by Satterwhite, Sooto and Goodman, the Rams went on a 13-4 run.
Goodman, a baseball prospect, hustled under the glass for seven of his nine first-half points. After Sooto and Satterwhite swished 3-point shots, Radford led 22-17 going into halftime.
Radford also benefited by extending man pressure to fullcourt, leading to eight turnovers by Kapolei in the first half. The Hurricanes, who did not have a single offensive rebound in the second quarter, did not attempt a foul shot before halftime.
The Hurricanes brought the lead down to 28-21 after a pair of buckets by Pookela Ahmad. Radford, still in its 2-3 zone, went on an 11-4 run.
Satterwhite drained another trey and banked in a 15-footer on a fast break as the Rams seized a 39-25 lead going into the fourth quarter.
