Mustangs stomp Surfriders early
Take away 20 turnovers and it was a perfect game for the Kalaheo Mustangs.
Kahua Hollinger scored 15 points as the 10th-ranked Mustangs stymied Kailua 57-40 last night at the Surfriders' gym. Kalaheo improved to 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association thanks to a fast start, avoiding a repeat of last year's stunning upset loss to the Surfriders.
"We played scared. We had too much respect for them," Kailua coach Tim Harrison said of a 14-0 deficit at the start.
Kalaheo's lead expanded to 40-16 in the third quarter before Harrison's team found its mettle and cut it to 13.
"I hope now we've learned that we can play with them," said Harrison, a former Kailua standout.
Tyler Caswell, a 6-foot-5 junior, added 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocks for the Mustangs. Kalaheo shot 48 percent from the field (20-for-42), getting three 3-pointers from Hollinger.
"We didn't get out on him and he was hot," Harrison said.
Sophomore Billy Oden led Kailua with eight points. The Surfriders shot 37 percent from the field (15-for-41) and turned the ball over 23 times.
Despite the victory, Hollinger wasn't exactly smiling.
"We played a little lackadaisical," the senior guard said. "Too many turnovers and missed free throws."
Kalaheo committed 20 turnovers, but its foul shooting wasn't so bad. The Mustangs made 11 of 16 attempts (69 percent).
"We shell-shocked them early, but they kept playing hard," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said. "When we got the 20-point lead, I took the press off, but we lost momentum.
"Kailua came back with a lot of energy."
