Hawaii junior surfers advance in Australia
Hawaii's Kai Barger, Kekoa Bacalso, Dustin Cuizon, Hank Gaskell and Carissa Moore all advanced after winning their respective heats yesterday at the Billabong World Junior surfing championships at North Narrabeen, Australia.
Barger, Bacalso, Cuizon and Gaskell all surf in today's third round. Granger Larsen finished second and TJ Barron third in their opening heats to drop into the loser's rounds in the boys field of 48.
Moore finished second in her first-round heat then advanced to the quarterfinals after outpointing France's Lee Ann Curran in her next heat.
Competition continues through Jan. 8.
Kim ties for ninth in Arizona golf tournament
Waiakea High freshman Kimberly Kim tied for ninth at the Joanne Winter-Arizona Silver Belle Championship golf tournament in Phoenix on Friday, shooting a 6-under 66 in the final round to finish at 216.
Kim's 66 was the lowest score of the 54-hole event played on the Biltmore Resort. It helped her tie Oklahoma's Alexandrea Schulte, eight strokes behind winner Ya-Ni Tseng of California.
Honolulu's Stephanie Kim finished at 217 for 11th, and Christine Kim -- Kimberly's sister -- tied with two others for 12th at 218. Wailuku's Kelly Nakashima was 16th in the 110-player tournament for female amateurs, ages 13-23.
