Harry Hayashida, right, and Lyle Takeuchi mashed the first batch of mochi rice on a stone "usu" yesterday morning on the Diamond Head lawn of the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel. Hayashida, who retired in 2000, has led this annual mochi-pounding event for the past seven years.
