Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation has awarded scholarships totaling $38,500 to 30 scholar-athletes, and more than $40,000 in grants to clubs and organizations providing community sports and youth programs.

» The University of Hawaii has given the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community to the following:
Cynthia Foreman, assistant professor of economics at Maui Community College; W. Craig Howes, professor of English and director of the Center for Biographic Research at UH-Manoa; Davianna McGregor, professor of ethnic studies at UH-Manoa; and William Puette, director of the Center for Labor Education and Research at UH-West Oahu.
» The East-West Center has awarded $31,400 from its Tsunami Relief Fund to the Ar-Raniry State Institute for Islamic Studies in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, to enable the institute's students in the tsunami-ravaged provincial capital to complete their college degrees in Jakarta. The EWC and the institute also promised to develop further cooperative activities.
» University of Hawaii's Frederick Burkle, a physician and professor of public health services and epidemiology, has received the Award for Service to Medicine and Community from the University of Vermont College of Medicine's Medical Alumni Association.
The award acknowledges his work in disaster management and humanitarian assistance throughout the world, as well as his exemplary military service.
» Four members of the Honolulu Fire Department have completed the process to obtain the "Chief Fire Officer" designation, including outgoing Fire Chief Attilio K. Leonardi, who was renewed for another three-year period; and first-timers Deputy Fire Chief John Clark and Assistant Chiefs Charles Wassman and Wayne Nojiri. They are among 483 CFOs worldwide, including Battalion Chief Manuel Neves, who first received the distinction in 2004.

WEST OAHU
Employee at salvage yard attacked during attempted theft
Police were looking for a man who hit with his vehicle an auto salvage yard employee who was trying to stop him from stealing parts yesterday.
The incident took place at the Pearl City Tow Yard at 11:10 a.m. Police said the victim, a 51-year-old man, suffered injuries to his right elbow and left hand, and might have also bruised his rib cage when the suspect struck him with his vehicle. The suspect drove away, police said.
Police said the victim refused to be treated at the scene and described the suspect only as a man in his 20s. Police are investigating the case as a second-degree attempted murder and first-degree robbery.
Ancient remains found at Campbell Industrial
An anonymous call to police reported the discovery of skeletal remains at Campbell Industrial Park yesterday.
Police said the call came in sometime before 1 p.m. and that a check of the location found what looked to be ancient remains.
Police said there appear to be no signs of foul play.
Racing motorcycles stolen from trailer
Police are asking for the public's help in finding two racing motorcycles stolen Thursday from a large white trailer in front of a Pearl City house.
The trailer was parked on Hoolehua Street when the theft occurred sometime between 2 and 4 a.m. Thursday, police said.
The trailer was spotted about 6 a.m. parked on the street fronting 1614 Kaumoli St. in Manana.
A man about 40 years old was seen getting out of a small white pickup truck, which had been towing the trailer, and headed toward Sam's Club.
At about 8:30 a.m. the suspect returned and drove off with the truck and trailer, police said.
The man is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing less than 200 pounds, with light-colored hair and a mustache.
The empty trailer was recovered at 8 that night on Kumoana Street in Manana.
Police said a white van with a roof rack, a red sport utility vehicle, similar to an Isuzu Rodeo, and a large black quad pickup truck was seen unloading items near the area.
Anyone with information concerning the motorcycles or the theft is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cell phone.

Clinic aide charged in assault on patient
Police charged a 49-year-old medical assistant yesterday for allegedly inappropriately touching a female patient at a Waikiki medical clinic.
Bryan G. Izumoto of Makiki was charged with fourth-degree sexual assault of a patient at the clinic, at 120 Kaiulani Ave., between 4 and 7 p.m. Oct. 4.
Izumoto was arrested and charged yesterday with two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault. Bail was set at $500.
HONOLULU
Killed pedestrian ID'd as Honolulu woman
The city Medical Examiner's Office has identified a pedestrian who died from injuries sustained in a Dec. 19 accident in Iwilei as Adoracion Dela Cruz of Honolulu.
Dela Cruz, 64, died Monday from injuries received after being struck by a 1990 Toyota pickup truck at the intersection of Dillingham Boulevard and McNeill Street.
Police said the pickup, heading west on Dillingham, turned left on McNeill and struck Dela Cruz, who was in a crosswalk on McNeill on the makai side of the intersection.
She was Oahu's 76th traffic fatality of the year.
Suspect is sought in Beretania robbery

Police are looking for a man suspected of robbing a Beretania Street bank Thursday.
Police said the suspect entered the American Savings Bank's Beretania branch at 5:52 p.m. Thursday and handed the teller a demand note.
The suspect fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police said the man had a weapon tucked in his jeans' waistband.
The man is described as being in his 20s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds with a slim build. He was seen wearing a black, long-sleeved T-shirt, jeans and a gray beanie.

2 Macy's employees accused of store theft
Police arrested two Macy’s Department Store employees after they were allegedly caught not ringing up purchases for their friends.
Both suspects were spotted by store security at Pearlridge Center on Tuesday between 6:45 and 7 p.m. They were each arrested for investigation of second-degree theft.
