Nelson leads Chaminade over Morningside
Chris Nelson hit four 3-pointers en route to 17 points to lead Chaminade to an 85-81 victory over Morningside College (Iowa) in a college basketball game at McCabe Gym yesterday.
Corey Campbell added 16 and Chris Reaves nearly had a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds for the Silverswords (7-4), winners of their last six.
Brad Schmit led the Mustangs (12-3) with 23 points, including 7 3-pointers. Tom Regan and Paul McGill each added 15 points for the visitors.
» Cal State Monterey Bay defeated Fontbonne University 90-53 in the Hilo Christmas Classic last night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
The tournament concludes today as host Hawaii-Hilo plays Cal State Monterey Bay at 7:15 p.m.
The Otters dominated the boards with a 52-24 advantage over the Griffins.
Otters head coach Bill Trumbo cleared his bench early as 13 players scored and had at least one rebound. Jay DeMaestri led the way with 21 points. Devoughn Lamont added 17 and Augie Johnson had 12.
The Griffins were led by Justin Storandt's 17 points. Ryan Kirkpatrick chipped in with 13.
Hernandez is new UH women's tennis coach
Rogelio "Jun" Hernandez is the new women's tennis coach, replacing Carolyn Katayama, according to athletic director Herman Frazier.
Katayama spent six seasons coaching the Rainbow Wahine, and assistant coach Chanon Alcon served as interim coach last fall.
Hernandez, who begins the position Jan. 4, previously served as an assistant for the Cal men's team. During his stay, the Bears finished with a No. 4 national ranking in the 2002-03 season.
Hernandez has also served as a hitting coach for pro players such as Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova and Conchita Martinez.
In addition, he played for San Diego State in the 1990s.
The Rainbow Wahine open their spring season Jan. 26 at Stanford as part of a four-match road trip.
Ludwig out, Martinez in for K-1 bout
James Martinez replaces Duane "Bang" Ludwig on the upcoming K-1 fighting Punishment in Paradise card and faces undisputed middleweight and cruiserweight champion Wayne Perrin III on Jan. 14 at Sea Life Park.
Martinez is 18-1 in K-1 fights.
Ludwig recently signed a deal to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which keeps him from making an appearance in Hawaii.
UFC veteran Pete Spratt fight Hawaii's Mark Moreno in the main event.
