L.J. Ivy, 11, was surrounded by breaking water at Sunset Beach yesterday. Surf on the North Shore was expected to rise overnight, with wave faces of between 25 and 30 feet expected tonight through Sunday thanks to a large west-northwest swell. The National Weather Service issued a high-surf warning for the north-facing shores of Oahu, Niihau, Kauai, Molokai and Maui for today through Sunday. Forecasters warned that an "extreme high tide" tomorrow morning could increase the potential for coastal flooding. Residents should take precautions to protect themselves and their property, the weather service said.
