Ribbons offer New Year discounts
Taking a page from Aloha Festivals, three Chinese community organizations have coordinated their Chinese New Year celebration activities for the Year of the Dog and are selling ribbons good for discounts at Chinese businesses on Oahu.
A $5 donation gets the ribbon and a pamphlet containing a calendar of events, parking map and list of restaurants and jewelry stores offering 10 percent discounts Jan. 2-28.
A group of University of Hawaii executive MBA students saw a need to coordinate the Chinese New Year celebration activities a year ago and began meeting with the groups that sponsor the annual activities -- the Chinatown Merchants Association, Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and United Chinese Coalition.
Last month, the students and organizations met with Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, who pledged the city's support.
"I think the way it's being promoted now, I think people will see a unifying theme. You won't see dates conflicting as much as perhaps as in the past," he said.
The activities span almost the entire month of January. The first public event will be the 57th Narcissus Festival Pageant, Jan. 14 at the Neal Blaisdell Center concert hall. The last even will be an open house at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza on Jan. 27-28.
The official day to celebrate Chinese New Year is Jan. 29.
