'Aloha, Paul!'
THEY USED TO DO RADIO IN HAWAII: Comedian Paul Ogata, second from left, had a lot of friends in the house for his "one-night farewell tour" Dec. 17 at Pipeline Cafe. Ogata, whose "day job" was doing mornings on 102.7 "Da Bomb," talked afterward with, from left, Blunt, formerly of Star 101.9; Fil Slash, formerly of 97.5 KPOI; and Double D, formerly of Star 101.9. Ogata is off to California to work on his comedy full time, D is moving to Riverside, Calif., with girlfriend Hope Hatton for a job at KEXX-FM, Blunt is promoting his "Natural Green" clothing line here, and Slash also has a project on the way.

NO THAI BRIDES FOR SHAWN!: Fil Slash, left, congratulated comedian Shawn Felipe on a job well done as the featured act on the bill. Felipe, a former Hawaii resident now based in Los Angeles, entertained the crowd with tales of his misadventures in L.A. and while visiting his relatives in Thailand. He says that based on his parents' marriage he won't look for a bride in Thailand.

SAY "GOOD BYE, PAUL": Paul Ogata, center, clowned backstage with Greg Azus, left, and Kento before his last show. In it, he discussed his marital woes and what he'll miss about Hawaii. Taking audience requests for vintage sketches, he closed with "The Sea Cucumber" and "Shopping for a Diamond Ring."

|
SUPPORTING LOCAL COMEDY: Youthful comic Kaleo Pilanca, left, talked comedy with Annie and Stan Egi. Pilanca wasn't on the bill but stopped by to catch Paul Ogata's final show. Ogata's comments on "people who chose to be stupid" and the true meaning of "three diamond pendants" were among the highlights.

|
POW! POW! POW!: Veteran comic Fred Ball, right, talked with Pipeline general manager Jed Roa after the show. Ball said he was particularly impressed by Ogata's ability to improvise and use audience comments as material. And yes, local folks still remember Ball as the host of "TV Pow."
