Ching on USA Soccer training roster
Brian Ching, a Kamehameha Schools graduate, was among 30 players named yesterday to the U.S. men's soccer team's first training camp roster.
Ching, who has competed for the U.S. in 10 international matches, is a striker on the Major League Soccer team which moved from San Jose to Houston last week. Practice begins Jan. 4 at Carson, Calif., with many players trying to earn spots on U.S. coach Bruce Arena's 23-man World Cup roster.
Ching and several members of the U.S. team will make an appearance at the ProXtreme Holiday youth soccer camp next Monday through Thursday at Waialae Iki Park. Call 561-4663 or visit www.hawaiisoccercamps.com for more information.
Chaminade upends Brigham Young-Hawaii
Chris Reaves scored 27 points to lead Chaminade past Brigham Young-Hawaii 84-76 in Pacific West Conference basketball last night at McCabe Gym.
Zack Whiting added 12 points and 11 assists for the Silverswords (5-4). Eric Boyce scored 19 points, and Wu Tai-Hao had 18 for the Seasiders (2-4).
» Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) survived a late charge to take a 77-72 victory over SUNY-Potsdam in the AmeriSports Coconut Coast Classic basketball tournament in the Kekuaokalani Gym at Kailua-Kona. The Classic ends with a 2 p.m. game today, when host Hawaii-Hilo plays UC San Diego.
Golf gift cards available for municipal play
Gift cards that can be used to cover rounds of golf at any of Oahu's six municipal golf courses are on sale at the Ala Wai Golf Course.
Cards are sold in $25 denominations, can be only used to pay fees at the starter's window and expire two years from the date of purchase. The cards can be also be used at the Pali, Ted Makalena, West Loch, Ewa Villages and Kahuku courses.
