Rainbow Wahine finish off Camels
The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine enjoyed their most productive first half this season with a 45-point offensive output and a 16-point effort on defense.
That set the tone for an 80-64 victory over the Campbell Fighting Camels in a nonconference game before 455 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center.
It was the fifth consecutive win for the Wahine (7-2), their longest winning streak and best start since the 2001-02 season, when they won six consecutive games twice.
"We talked about what a letdown it would be if we came out and didn't do what we were capable of doing," said Brittany Grice, who led UH with 16 points. "We wanted to show them how we should have played the night before. We definitely were sharper."
Janevia Taylor, who scored 13 points, agreed.
"We made a few adjustments in our offense," Taylor said. "We simply ran our offense better and ran a lot more. We had a lot of good outlet passes and fast breaks. That was the key."
Unlike the game between the teams Friday night, when UH never held a comfortable lead until the last 32 seconds, the Wahine started yesterday afternoon's game fast and did not let up despite coach Jim Bolla playing everyone in uniform.
Hawaii started the game by scoring the first four field goals. Alofa Toiaivao put in a layup off the opening tip and Dalia Solia connected on a 15-foot jumper from the right in the first minute. Grice made another layup and Pam Tambini rebounded a miss and scored for an 8-0 lead after 3:15 had elapsed.
Not only did it set the tone, it forced Campbell out of its zone defense that bothered UH a night earlier.
The Fighting Camels (3-6) managed just four baskets in the first 8:20. Adrienne Rieley had two of those buckets. Her second field goal came with 11:40 to go and left Campbell trailing 18-8.
The Wahine then put together a 20-1 run, their best of the season, to build a 38-9 lead with 3:29 left in the half.
During that span that lasted 8 minutes, 56 seconds, Campbell was 1-for-11 from the field and 1-for-5 from the free-throw line with four turnovers.
Taylor connected on two treys during the run and sophomore Saundra Cariaga scored her first basket of the season. It came at the 6:24 mark on a backdoor layup off a feed from Toiaivao.
"I knew it would come sometime. Once you get your first basket, you feel more comfortable on the court," said Cariaga. "We practice that play all the time."
The Fighting Camels took advantage of sloppy UH passing and turnovers to start the second half and twice cut the deficit to 18 points. But eventually the Wahine settled down and it became a game of matching baskets as defense at both ends was lacking.
"We watched the video of Friday's game and we just weren't executing our offense. We weren't going to the spots we were supposed to," said Bolla. "In the shootaround I placed everyone where they should be.
"Today we executed, got some quick baskets and it forced them into a man-to-man defense. They couldn't play their half-court game."
