DESIGN INDUSTRY GETS NEW HOME

Inspiration Hawaii yesterday broke ground on its ambitious, flagship building on Kapiolani Boulevard near Pensacola and Piikoi streets. Scheduled to open late next year, the 80,000-square-foot Honolulu Design Center will contain a 65,000-square foot showroom, offices, a cafe, restaurant, art gallery and 2,600-square-foot amphitheater. The center's owner, Thomas Sorensen, hopes the building will serve as the centerpiece for Honolulu's design community. The project's lead architect, Matt Gilbertson of RIM Architects, said the building's design "can be understood as an expression of two 'waves' in reflection off of the adjacent 'seawall' parking structure, expressing a uniquely island experience."
