Versatile Kiki Hugho takes friends' advice, writes book

KIKI HUGHO is a versatile guy. He is captain of the harbor pilot boat, has sailed on the Hokulea, is a singer-musician and is an artistic sign painter. He has also been blessed with the ability to sense danger, to remain calm in serious frightening situations and to take action that has saved not only his life but the lives of others. Friends encouraged him to write a book about his experiences and he has. It is called "Something Told Me -- Against All Odds Volume I." He uses the name "Wai Kiki" as author. Kiki is working on Volume II, which includes the segment, "Eddie's Final Story." Kiki and Eddie Aikau were crewmen on the Hokulea when it capsized in 1978. He and Eddie both had a premonition of danger and Kiki said that "when we stepped aboard on that fateful stormy night in 1978, we embraced and made a promise to each other that whoever survives this ordeal has to tell the whole story." Kiki says he will reveal the entire story of what happened to the Hokulea and the miracle rescue that saved the crew on the planned voyage to Tahiti. It was on this voyage that "Eddie Would Go" on a surfboard to seek help after the canoe capsized in heavy seas. Eddie was never seen again ...

Neiman's holiday season moves into high gear

NEIMAN MARCUS held its annual Christmas party for InCircle card customers Thursday. Food and beverage stations and entertainment were on all three levels. Models displayed the latest fashions. Singer Sonya Mendez and the Special Touch Band kept things moving on the second floor. Bassist Miles Jackson, drummer Peter Factora, Aaron Aranita, who plays keyboards and sax, and guitarist David Yamasaki make up the band. The sounds of Rocky Holmes on sax and guitarist Bobby Nishida filled level one. The classical string duo of Ernie Provencher and Mary Enderle was also on floor one. Harpist Sharene Boulos performed on the top level. The Honolulu Madrigal Quartet and the Pacific Trades a Capella Quartet harmonized on Christmas songs. Solo guitarist Shoji Ledward performed. Models included Tania DeJesus, Ying Ying Lee, Adam Jung, Rain Rusden, Courtney Arndt, Brynn Jones, Triniti Lanzo, Tiffany Hilton and Thomas Meharey. Store G.M. Al Tomonari must have been happy to see staffers ringing up sale after sale ...
