Patriots win Pop Warner championship

The Lihue Patriots defeated the Hollister Vikings of San Jose, Calif., 14-0 to capture a national Pop Warner football championship yesterday at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla.

The Patriots (12-0) from Kauai were crowned the Tomlin champion in the 9-11 age group in the Pop Warner Division II Pee Wee tournament.

The Patriots advanced to the final by defeating the East Tampa Bandits (Fla.) 14-6 on Tuesday.

The Nanakuli Hawks were in the Division I Pee Wee tournament, but failed to reach the finals.

Sea Warriors drop road game

Ryan Read scored 34 points and Giovanni St. Amant added 26 to lead Masters College to an 88-84 overtime win over the Hawaii Pacific University basketball team yesterday in Santa Clarita, Calif.

Donnell Dobbins led HPU (1-5) with 24 points and Joseph Ison added 15 points and 13 rebounds.

» Austin Smylie scored 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Brigham Young-Hawaii basketball team beat Alaska Fairbanks 76-59 in the semifinals of the Glacier Classic in Alaska.

Eric Boyce had 15 points for BYUH, hitting all seven of his attempts from the free-throw line.

The Seasiders will meet Alaska-Anchorage today.
