Tambini helps UH end road skid
SAN FRANCISCO » Pam Tambini scored a career-high 20 points to spark the Hawaii women's basketball team to a 71-63 victory over the San Francisco Dons last night.
The win was the first on the road in a nonconference game since the Rainbow Wahine beat Alaska-Anchorage in the Northern Lights Invitational on Feb. 26, 1993.
Tambini, a 5-foot-10 junior wing, also had a career-high five steals and six rebounds.
Trailing 35-30 at the half, Hawaii (4-2) took the lead for good (51-49) on a Tambini bucket at the 9:29 mark of the second half. She also made the free throw to start an 11-0 Wahine run.
Tanya Smith followed by converting two free throws after hauling in an offensive rebound. Brittany Grice then hit a layup and Janevia Taylor connected on two jumpers following a steal and defensive rebound by Tambini to put UH up 60-49 with 5:46 to play.
The Wahine built a 14-point lead (68-54), their biggest of the game, on consecutive 3-point shots by Taylor and Dalia Solia with 3:02 on the clock.
"I pointed out at the half that we had to go to the (foul) line more. We turned it around and got into the bonus situation early," said UH coach Jim Bolla. "We ran better and made some good decisions.
"It was just a matter of not screwing up at the end. You need to be up by 10 or 12 points (at the end) on the road in case you make a mistake or the calls don't go your way."
The first half was a seesaw affair with nine lead changes. The Wahine were sloppy handling the ball and made 13 turnovers that led to 16 USF points.
"It was to be expected with a 10-day layoff. Yet, it was only five points and we weren't playing well and they were," Bolla said.
"The five points wasn't a big deal with our shooting percentage (.364). What concerned me was how they got the lead. We had two possessions at the end of the half where we didn't think very well."
The Wahine took a 30-27 lead on Solia's 3-pointer with a little over 2 minutes to go, then watched USF's Dominique Carter score eight consecutive points to give the Dons (2-6) the lead at intermission.
Carter led USF with 18 points, but was held to four in the second half.
"I told our players at the half that she (Carter) had 14 points in 14 minutes and was on a pace to get 40. In the second half, it was a combination of people watching her and not letting her have the quick, easy basket," said Bolla.
Amy Sanders, who scored eight points, played the full 40 minutes, the first Wahine to do so this year. It was her first game not scoring in double figures this season.
"Amy didn't have a great game offensively. She is no secret any more, but she did some good things defensively," said Bolla.
"We had other people step up. Pam played real well. Brittany played real well. Janevia didn't shoot well, but made some nice plays and scored when it counted.
"That's what I like about this team. It doesn't have to depend on one player."
The Wahine conclude the trip tomorrow with a game at Santa Clara.
