Schlanger continues good showing in Texas
Rainbow Wahine swimmer Melanie Schlanger finished second in the 200-meter free and helped lead her 800 free relay team to a third-place finish on the second day of the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas, yesterday.
Schlanger posted a time of 1:45.76 in the 200 and teamed with Joy Symons, Nicole Mackey and Bache Atkins to a time of 7:18.6 in the relay. Mackey also finished third in the 100 back.
On Thursday, Schlanger tied for first in the 50 free.
» Thomas Winkler had the best finish for the Hawaii men with a third in the 100 back. He finished in 47.61.
BYU picked first, UH fifth in preseason poll
The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team was picked to finish fifth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation preseason coaches' poll released yesterday.
With five returning starters, Brigham Young was picked to finish first with 28 points and six first-place votes. UCLA was second with 37 points, followed by Long Beach State and defending champion Pepperdine.
UH opens its season at UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 13.
Wildcats rally past Silverswords
Central Washington shot 71 percent from the field in the second half as the Wildcats rallied past the Chaminade basketball team 105-96 last night at the Western Oregon Classic in Monmouth, Ore.
Lance Den Boer scored 25 points and Christian Bannish had 24 for CWU (4-2). Zack Whiting finished with 28 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds for Chaminade (1-4).
