Weng is national D-II player of year
Brigham Young-Hawaii outside hitter Yu Chuan Weng was named the Daktronics NCAA National Player of the Year in Division II volleyball yesterday.
Weng, who earlier this week was picked to the AVCA D-II All-America first-team, also made the Daktronics All-America first team.
Weng led the nation in kills with 6.91 per game and led the Seasiders to a 20-5 record and an appearance in the NCAA D-II tournament.
Hawaii Pacific middle blocker Barbara Martin made the Daktronics All-America second team, and Sea Warriors setter Vera Oliveira made the third team.
Griffin's 18 points lift Hawaii-Hilo
Hawaii-Hilo got a game-high 18 points from Justin Griffin in a 58-51 victory over University of the Incarnate Word in NCAA Division II basketball in San Antonio yesterday.
Griffin had 14 of his points in the second half, and he managed eight points in a span of 1:28 late in the game to seal the victory for the Vulcans (4-2), who are ranked 21st nationally in Division II.
Antario Williams and Paul Connolly had 12 points each for the Cardinals (1-3).
Oahu schools share $100,000 in equipment
Forty-two high schools will be sharing $100,000 worth of free athletic equipment and uniforms from adidas and Wilson Sporting Goods.
The schools earned the equipment through the Kraft Shop and Score program.
Parents, students and other community members accumulated points for their participating school by purchasing Kraft and other products at Times Super Markets.
Castle High School was the top earner for the third year in a row and will receive $10,000 worth of equipment.
Kaimuki, McKinley, Kalani and Aiea rounded out the top five point-earners.
A formal presentation will be made during halftime of tonight's Kahuku vs. Punahou state Division I championship football game.
