First Friday back with a holiday theme
It's time once again for First Friday, the city's free downtown-Chinatown gallery walk. Here are highlights of what some of the art spaces are offering this month from 5 to 9 p.m.:
» The ARTS at Marks Garage, 1159 Nuuanu Ave. (521-2903): "Elves Can't Make This Stuff." An alternative shopping experience of new and experimental products for the holiday season. Entertainment provided by the 10-piece Hawaii Kakula Ensemble, playing traditional and modern Sulawesi folk music from Indonesia, starting at 6 p.m.
» The Pegge Hopper Gallery, 1164 Nuuanu Ave. (524-1160): Hopper and Roy Venters will exhibit new original artwork, plus some smaller gift items, in a show benefiting the Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawaii.
» Bethel Street Gallery, 1140 Bethel St. (524-3552): Artist reception for Tom Smith, whose "Solitude" charcoal drawings are on exhibit through Dec. 14.
» The Cathedral Gallery, 1184 Bishop St. (536-7036): The artwork of the winners of the World AIDS Day poster contest. Participants used colored pencils to illustrate one of two themes: the global "Stop AIDS -- Keep the Promise" and the local "No Shame." The 20 winners were chosen from hundreds of high school entries from all over the state. Also on display throughout the month, the meditative acrylic work of Bahja.
» NextDoor, 43 N. Hotel St.: New mural by Los Angeles urban artist Shepard Fairey, who is wrapping up his residency with The Contemporary Museum. Music by jazz band Melogic and a special martini bar offered.
» DETAILS Gallery, 1142 Bethel St. (546-8000): "Gifts of Aloha," a silent auction to benefit Parents and Children Together. Local artists Jennifer Rothschild, Pamela Au, Laura Fowler, Emily Catey, Jennifer Garner, Erin Callen and Sue Koontz have contributed original Christmas stocking artwork for the fundraiser that will be on display until Dec. 16. Kalani Wilson, Sylvia Makk and Don Rosse have donated other works of art as well. Tickets for the event are $6, which includes two glasses of wine.
