Lahainaluna's Hala'api'api back in the middle for Eastern Kentucky
Fatai Hala'api'api, who set an Eastern Kentucky record for blocked shots (51) in a season as a freshman, but redshirted last year due to an injury, is starting again for the Colonials.
The 6-foot-1 center from Lahainaluna is averaging eight points and 3.2 rebounds per game.
» Starting guard Rashaun Broadus (Mililani '02) scored 11 points as Brigham Young (2-1) defeated Southern Utah 86-61 for the ninth consecutive time Saturday. The 6-foot junior hit a pair of treys to score six of the Cougars' first nine points.
» Sophomore guard Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04) scored her first double-double of the season with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds as the No. 13 (NAIA) Menlo College Oaks beat Evergreen State 60-34 last Saturday.
» Shannon Riley, a senior guard from Maryknoll, scored 13 points for Menlo.
» Taylor Smith (Kalaheo '05), a 5-11 freshman guard/forward, is averaging 16.3 minutes and 6.5 points per game for Pepperdine (1-3). She is the team's second-leading rebounder with 22.
>> Kyle Pape (Iolani '05) has started all four games for the NCAA Division II Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (2-2). The 6-2 freshman guard is averaging 4.5 points per game. He is second on the team with nine assists.
» Shanna-Lei Dacanay is averaging 20.2 minutes and 5.8 points a game coming off the bench for the 5-0 Washington (Mo.) University Bears. The freshman guard from Punahou leads the NCAA Division III team with eight steals and is tied for second with 15 assists.
» Casey Kushiyama, a University High graduate who completed his collegiate career at Linfield last year as the starting point guard, is an assistant coach for the Wildcats men's team this year.
Perry shares Pac-10 freshman honor
Jeremy Perry, a redshirt freshman from Kahuku, has been named a Pac-10 Conference Co-Freshman of the year, sharing the honor with Arizona wide receiver Michael Thomas.
A starter on Oregon State's offensive line, Perry helped the Beavers improve their rushing yards per game by more than 50 over 2004. The 6-foot-2, 315-pounder also contributed to a reduction in quarterback sacks.
Joe Lobendahn, a senior inside linebacker for the Washington Huskies, was picked for the All-Pac-10 second team. The Saint Louis graduate had 76 tackles (40 solo), two sacks, two interceptions, two passes broken up and 5 1/2 tackles for a loss.
Enoka Lucas, a 6-3, 296-pound center for the Oregon Ducks, also was named to the second team. He is a Kamehameha graduate.
Max Unger, a 6-5, 291-pound redshirt freshman for Oregon, received honorable-mention notice. The offensive lineman is a graduate of Hawaii Prep.
» Shawn Lauvao (Farrington '05) earned the McBurney Scout Team Award at the Arizona State football banquet on Saturday. The award goes to a player for his dedication on the offensive scout team. Lauvao is a 6-3, 297-pound guard.
» Micah Cravalho, a senior wide receiverpunt returner for Evangel University, has been named to the first team of the All-Heart of America Athletic Conference football team. In 10 games, Cravalho caught 35 passes for 570 yards and seven touchdowns. He also had 69 yards rushing, 358 on punt returns and 320 on kickoff returns to place fourth in the conference in all-purpose yards (1,267).
His brother Josiah, a sophomore cornerback, was named to the honorable mention team. He tied for fifth in the conference in defending the pass by intercepting two and breaking up nine.
They are Kaahumanu Hou Christian School graduates.
2 Hawaii booters reach Elite Eight
Duke Hashimoto, a senior striker from Iolani, scored the second goal at 33:44 from 14 yards out in Southern Methodist's 3-1 win over North Carolina-Greensboro in the third-round of the NCAA men's soccer tournament on Sunday. The Mustangs (13-5-3) host North Carolina (17-3-3) in the quarterfinal round Saturday.
» David Gualdarama and New Mexico (16-1-3) also advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time with a 1-0 win Saturday over Cal State Northridge. The sophomore midfielder from Kamehameha started and played 73 minutes. The Lobos host California (15-3-2) tomorrow.
Vazquez first-team BWC selection
Amanda Vazquez (Moanalua '02) finished an outstanding career at UC Irvine by being named to the All-Big West Conference women's volleyball first team. The middle blocker is second in career block assists with 337 and seventh with 60 solo blocks.
Vazquez is sixth in the single-season records with a .353 hitting percentage and fifth on the career list at .315. She had 925 kills and 2,105 attempts over her four-year career, good for 10th place in those categories.
Anderson runs well at national meet
Iolani grad Nicole Anderson was 73rd out of 219 runners with a time of 22:37.9 on the 6K course Nov. 19 at the NCAA Division III Championships in Delaware, Ohio. The freshman helped Amherst finish seventh with 213 points.
